The Betting and Gaming Council is the standards body for the betting and gaming industry and its members include betting shops, casinos and online betting and gaming companies.
Betting and gaming is a key part of the UK’s dynamic and diverse leisure and entertainment industry. The industry contributes over £4 billion in taxes to the UK Exchequer and provides work for over 109,000 people. As the single industry body, we work with our members, large and small, to raise standards, create a culture of safer gambling and build public and institutional trust in our world class industry.
Established in 2019, the BGC puts the customer first to drive standards over and above regulatory requirements to ensure a safer, fairer betting and gaming experience for all.
The opportunity: External Affairs Executive
The BGC has built a strong and professional team delivering for our members and their strategic priorities. We are now seeking an External Affairs Executive to join our team to help take our work to the next level.
The External Affairs Executive will support the delivery of the BGC’s public affairs and communications programme, working closely with the Director of Public Affairs and Director of Communications. The role will involve supporting parliamentary engagement activity, monitoring political and media developments, preparing stakeholder briefings, and assisting with the delivery of communications campaigns and events.
The role is full time, based in our offices in Westminster, with salary £28,000 - £35,000 per annum dependent on experience.
About you
We are seeking an organised and enthusiastic External Affairs Executive to join our team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone entry-level or early in their career who is interested in politics, policy and communications, to gain hands-on experience working at the intersection of industry, government and media.
Knowledge of the betting and gaming industry is desirable but not essential. The willingness and ability to learn fast, and apply that learning to help the BGC achieve its objectives is essential.
Job Description
Job Title: External Affairs
Executive
Location: Westminster, London (hybrid)
Employment type: Permanent, full-time
Reporting to: Role is split between reporting to the Director of Public Affairs and Director of Communications for operational performance and progress towards strategic objectives.
Key Responsibilities
· Monitor parliamentary proceedings including debates, questions, select committee activity and legislative developments relevant to the sector, providing regular summaries for the BGC team and our members.
· Build relationships with parliamentarians, officials and regulators; represent the sector at meetings and roundtables.
· Support the Director of Communications with media monitoring and daily press summaries.
· Assist in drafting communications materials including press releases, newsletters, briefings and social media content, with opportunities to lead on ideation of content.
· Assist in drafting briefings, correspondence and stakeholder communications with Parliamentarians.
· Maintain accurate stakeholder engagement databases across the public affairs and communications teams.
· Support the organisation of key initiatives including industry campaigns and engagement programmes such as Safer Gambling Week.
Attitudes, knowledge and skills required
· A good understanding of UK politics and parliamentary procedure.
· Excellent communicator; able to distil complex policy into clear, actionable messaging.
· Proactive and enthusiastic; able to work across teams and deliver effectively.
· Knowledge of the betting and gaming industry would be a nice-to-have but is not essential. Willingness and ability to learn fast and apply that to help the BGC achieve its objectives is essential.
· Educated to degree level or equivalent experience.
· Working knowledge of the betting and gaming industry would be desirable but not essential.
Salary
Salary range: £28,000 - £35,000, based on experience.
