Overview
Working within the nursing directorate as a member of the corporate team you will help save and improve lives, leading on patient and donor safety throughout NHSBT including the development of strategy, training and continuous improvement through learning responses for the implementation and embedment of the Patient Safety Incident Response Framework.
NHSBT is responsible for organ and tissue donation and transplantation, blood donation and transfusion medicine, therapeutic apheresis and stem cell transplantation, requiring differing approaches to ensure safety of service users. You will drive transformation and improvements in patient and donor safety to deliver NHSBT’s core values of Expert, Caring and Quality. You will lead with leadership and focus through identification, innovation and problem-solving to ensure improvements are realised, learning is optimised and evidenced, and that collaborations with partners in the wider NHS are maintained.
You will build relationships with internal and external stakeholders and provide passionate, enthusiastic leadership to contribute to excellence within the nursing and quality teams and to the goal of saving and improving lives. You will lead the complaints team to deliver to policy, supporting improvements.
Responsibilities
* Lead on patient and donor safety in NHSBT, developing a patient and donor safety culture and collaborating with wider networks to share good practice and learn from each other.
* Provide leadership and oversight of the National Patient and Donor Safety Strategy and related processes (incident management systems, national reporting databases, education and training, policies and procedures).
* Support the development and implementation of the Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF) in NHSBT, including developing a Learning Framework, leading and directly supporting patient and donor safety improvement activities, and embedding systems thinking, human factors understanding and just culture principles.
* Work collaboratively with the Nursing Leadership team and quality specialists to ensure patient and donor safety is prioritised across NHSBT.
* Support NHSBT to place patients and donors at the centre of all safety activity; deliver reports and support development of governance reports from teams.
* Support the development and delivery of the CQC self-assessment process.

What we are looking for
Qualification and experience (essential):
* Masters level or equivalent demonstrable knowledge and experience.
* Healthcare professional with a relevant clinical qualification and registration with NMC or HCPC, maintained in the role.
* Extensive experience in a patient or donor safety-related role with understanding of safety improvement principles in health systems.
* Substantial experience at a senior level and advising on legislation, regulations and standards.
* Experience of regulatory inspections and safety investigations, training delivery and facilitating learning, and handling complex/sensitive information.
