Position details
* Job Title: Locum Consultant Breast Surgeon
* Start Date: TBC
* Contract Type: Fixed term
* Duration: 12 months
* Purpose: Maternity cover; providing structured training and supervised clinical development
About the Role
This post is appointed on a fixed-term basis with the primary purpose of providing structured training and supervised clinical development. While the postholder will contribute to service delivery, the overarching purpose of the post is to provide defined educational opportunities, supervised clinical practice, and experience aligned to the relevant specialty training curriculum.
Responsibilities
* Flexibly respond to the pressures and needs of the services and fulfil duties of the agreed weekly job plan.
* Maintain the highest standards of management of breast conditions and disease.
* Attend and contribute to multidisciplinary meetings as appropriate.
* When possible, manage emergency breast referrals within the breast unit during office hours. No requirement to participate in General Surgery out of hours rota.
Training and Development
* Provide high-quality training within the breast unit alongside colleagues and clinical leads.
* Responsible for training and supervision of junior medical staff; devote time regularly for this activity.
* Support ongoing research themes and projects, including recruitment to clinical trials; remain up to date with Good Clinical Practice.
Qualifications, Training & Experience
Essential Criteria
* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
* GMC registration with a licence to practice
* Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
* Higher general surgery qualification (e.g., FRCS)
* Participation in appraisal and revalidation
* Experience in breast surgery
* Experience in surgical aspects of breast screening
* Experience in oncoplastic and reconstructive breast surgery
* Commitment to working within National Guidelines for Breast Cancer Management
* Experience in management of breast disease
Desirable Criteria
* Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT or CESR (CP) within 6 months of interview; or CESR or European Community Rights
* Evidence of participation in research and service development
* Membership of the Association of Breast Surgery
* Membership of other relevant subspecialty associations
* Specialist breast surgery qualification
* Postgraduate degree
* Oncoplastic Fellowship or equivalent
