Trainer Hours of Work: Full-Time Location:Current vacancies are in the Greater Belfast/Antrim area, however future vacancies may arise across Northern Ireland. Closing Date/Time:pm Job Background: The PSNI aims to develop resourceful, adaptable and skilled police officers and police staff who embody victim, community and workforce focused policing. The trainers role is to design, deliver and review a range of learning activities, including classroom teaching, practical exercises, e-learning, and assessments. Trainers are required to manage the learning environment, lead participants through the course, and ensure their wellbeing is considered. Trainers are expected to be role models, upholding the values of the PSNI. Hours of Work: Monday Friday 37 working hours per week. (Additional hours, including evenings and weekends, may be required to fulfil the role effectively. Overtime will be paid at the appropriate rates). Salary: Currently £31,643 to £32,293 moving to £33,542 - £34,231 from 1 August 2025 plus £1365 Environmental Allowance. Main Activities: The main duties and responsibilities associated with the role include the following: Key Responsibilities Understand the theory of learning and how to apply that to develop yourself and others. Coach, mentor and develop students. Manage judgemental training. Assess learner performance and provide supportive, developmental and evidence-based feedback. Understand the different type of assessment practices and how to apply these within the training role. Develop, plan and deliver classroom based learning and development programmes which engage and support learners. Monitor and maintain course/programme quality. Evaluate and improve training provision across departments. Explore new methods of training including blended delivery. Embed the Code of Ethics, Police Staff Handbook, and the Competency and Values (CVF) Framework in training. Maintain and develop personal skills and subject matter expertise. Stakeholder Engagement Deliver training to Student Officers at the start of their career, and to Police Officers and Police Staff at all levels throughout their career. Liaise with line managers for feedback, performance reporting, and course development. Collaborate with management at a range of levels across the organisation on course content, learner outcomes, and lessons learned. Engage with universities and other accreditation bodies as required in relation to course specifications. Engage with a range of external stakeholders in relation to the development of course content, as required. Provide training to partner agencies and other government bodies and organisations who may attend joint training courses with the PSNI, as required. Problem Solving & Challenges Adapt course content due to changes in duration, resources, or availability of venues/equipment. Manage varied learner abilities, engagement levels, and behaviour of learners. Deal with unexpected disruptions, including speaker cancellations and technical/equipment issues. Maintain credibility with learners, especially those in frontline and operational roles. Decision Making Determine learner competency, progression, and potential re-sit requirements. Adjust course delivery in real time to meet learners needs. Recommend course improvements, training tools, and instructional methods. Decide on participant removal from courses due to behavioural or preparedness issues. Autonomy & Accountability Operate within the framework of PSNI policies, and national licensing standards (e.g., College of Policing). Exercise professional judgement with support from colleagues. Role model ethical and professional standards aligned with PSNI values, the Code of Ethics and Police Staff Handbook. Resource Management Manage classroom resources and specialist equipment responsibly and efficiently. Ensure proper use and storage of training materials, devices, and facilities. Leadership & Teamwork Act as lead trainer when required, coordinating delivery with other trainers. Maintain a positive, controlled learning environment. Assume line management responsibility depending on role. Serve as a leadership role model to learners and peers, promoting the ethos of PSNI values. Other Information: This is a single-point of entry process, and itMAY be used to fill the following training posts or any other training position arising in the lifespan of the campaign e.g. - Local Area Training (District Officers) - Trainer Development Unit - Learning Technologies Faculty (includes Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Training) - Leadership and Organisational Development - Foundation Faculty (includes Student Officer Development Programme, Probationary Officer Development Programme, Neighbourhood, Crime Training) - Tactical Training Faculty (includes PSP, Public Order, Firearms Training, Boat Training) - Operational Support - Specialist Operations Training Successful candidates may be required to wear the Police Staff Trainers uniform, depending on role. The successful candidate must have access to a form of transport which will enable them to fulfil the responsibilities of the job in full. Successful candidates will be required to work throughout Northern Ireland as necessary. Trainers are required to attend, attain and retain all relevant seminars, conferences, and specialist courses, both within and outside Northern Ireland, as necessary. On appointment to this role, the successful individual will be required to undertake Level 5 Advanced Diploma in Professional Teaching (not necessary if this diploma or equivalent qualification is already held) to enable them to fulfil the role requirements. Person Specification: Essential Qualifications Level 3 Certificate in Education and Training, or an equivalent/higher related qualification. Essential Skills and Experience A minimum of 1 years experience in adult learning or training delivery, which must include: Planning and preparing learning and development (course design). Developing and preparing resources for learning and development. Delivering training, including facilitating, engaging, supporting and assessing learners. Maintaining high training standards and observing quality assurance procedures and acting when appropriate. Evaluating and improving training courses. Essential Other IT literate specifically in the use of the Microsoft Office suite (including MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel and MS Outlook). Desirable Qualifications and Experience Personal Safety Programme (PSP) certificate. National Firearms Instructor qualification. Experience of carrying out risk assessments. Experience of delivering CTSFO training within last 5 years. Short listing will be carried out based on essential criteria.
