Vision for Education are actively recruiting a Behavioural Support Teaching Assistant to work in the Newport area, supporting primary to secondary aged pupils, with a strong focus on 1:1 support. This role is based within a pupil referral provision that supports children and young people with social, emotional and behavioural needs across both primary and secondary phases. The focus is on delivering consistent, personalised support using a holistic and practical approach that recognises each pupil’s individual needs, experiences and strengths. Many of the pupils supported face significant challenges outside of education. For these learners, school provides structure, routine and a sense of safety. As a Teaching Assistant, you will play a key role in helping pupils feel understood, supported and encouraged to engage positively with learning and school life. The school is seeking a calm, resilient and nurturing Behavioural Support Teaching Assistant who can build strong, trusting relationships and respond confidently to challenging behaviour. When pupils become dysregulated, you will use practical strategies to support emotional regulation, guide them to a calm space when needed, and help them reintegrate into learning at their own pace. A proactive, solution-focused and holistic attitude is essential in this role. A Team Teach qualification or similar behaviour management training would be beneficial, but this is not essential as full training can be provided. What will the role involve? • Providing 1:1 behavioural and emotional support to primary to secondary aged pupils • Building consistent, trusting relationships with pupils • Supporting emotional regulation through practical and holistic strategies • Using de-escalation techniques and positive behaviour approaches • Working closely with class teachers and the wider support team • Encouraging engagement, confidence and participation in learning • Promoting emotional wellbeing and positive social interaction • Remaining calm, adaptable and resilient in challenging situations The ideal candidate will have one or more of the following: • Experience supporting primary or secondary pupils with challenging behaviour or SEMH needs • Experience working 1:1 with primary and/or secondary aged pupils • A Team Teach, PROACT-SCIP or MAPA qualification (desirable, not essential) • A calm, empathetic and practical approach to behaviour support • The ability to remain patient and composed under pressure • An understanding of the primary and/or secondary curriculum • Registration with the Education Workforce Council (EWC), or willingness to register The school regularly offers permanent opportunities to Teaching Assistants who show commitment, consistency and a genuine passion for pupil wellbeing.
