Overview of the Role:
We are looking to recruit a self-starting and enthusiastic Editorial Assistant to join the RHS Editorial team, working primarily on The Garden magazine and RHS website RHS.org.uk but also with the Gardening With The RHS Podcast and The Garden app and Grow app and other RHS publications.
Reporting to the Executive Editor, this role supports the planning, administration, maintenance and creation of content across the RHS’s print and digital platforms.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone wanting to learn progress in a cross platform gardening media environment with a team of experienced digital content editors, writers and journalists. The role needs someone willing to take on any task needed in a busy fast paced environment and has potential for a self-starter to grow the role. This is a busy and varied full-time position.
Key responsibilities:
* Support the editorial team to create content for The Garden magazine, the RHS website and other editorial platforms.
* Assist website Digital Content Editors to write, template content, upload images, captions, events and text amendments to the RHS website.
* Upload Partner Garden content and RHS Shows exhibitor content onto the RHS website.
* Assist Front Section Magazine Editor in selecting letters for publication.
* Find relevant upcoming books for review, make contact with interviewees and undertake interviews for magazine articles.
* Acknowledge and respond to all emails in The Garden’s inbox and the web editorial inbox, and answer office telephones. A keen eye for a story amongst emails is necessary.
* Collation and maintenance of a database of gardening experts to help inform features planning
* Provide administrative support for the editorial team for whatever job comes up
Person specification
We are looking for a strong self-starter who can focus on the job and prioritise conflicting workloads independently, who is passionate about the RHS strategy and mission, the environment and someone who wants to help make gardening available for everyone.
Essential:
* Good verbal and written communicator, a strong collaborator with a positive outlook
* Well organised and strong time management skills with proven ability to meet deadlines
* Proven ability to work and problem solve in teams
* Experience using Microsoft Office applications
* Excellent attention to detail
* Ability to be flexible with ability to manage a varied and changing workload.
* A good eye for design and imagery.
* Experience in content creation for magazines, web, podcasts, newsletters or social media
* Ability to brainstorm and pitch ideas and write articles for both the website and magazine.
Desirable:
* A journalism qualification.
* An interest in gardening, ecology and the environment
* Aware of the current media landscape e.g. social media trends.
* Use of digital content management systems.
* Experience of using of Photoshop.
* Experience of Microsoft Teams
