We are looking forpaediatric and neonatal Resident ST4+ doctors, post CCT specialist doctors or residentto join our innovative and exciting tertiary level neonatal unit.
The Luton & Dunstable University Hospital neonatal unit is the tertiary centre for Beds & Herts Perinatal Network. The maternity unit is one of the busiest in the East of England with over 5100 deliveries per year. In 2024 there were 652 admissions to the NICU resulting in 2036 ITU cot days. Over the last few years this number ranges up to just over 2500 ITU cot days.The new Neonatal Critical Care Unit will provide facilities that are spacious, modern and fitting for delivering safe, effective and family integrated care. The improved working environment will support the learning, development, wellbeing and resilience of our staff.
A comprehensive range of neonatal services are provided at the L&D; i.e. inhaled nitric oxide, high frequency oscillation and hypothermia therapy for neonatal encephalopathy with close links to Great Ormond Street Hospital and Addenbrookes Hospital for surgical and cardiac care. Subspecialty neonatal interests include cardiology, nutrition, respiratory and neurology, with specialist chronic lung disease, neurodevelopment and cardiology clinics.
The appointees will be offered a full time post on an EWTD compliant 15 person ST4+ rota. There is a separate consultant, ST4-ST8 and ST1-ST3 rotaworking in conjunction with a specialist nursing team and allied health professionals
Within the Neonatal Unit, the Senior Clinical Fellow will:
• Be required to provide a ST4+ level of staffing for the department
• Work under the supervision of and be responsible to their respective consultant, or the on call consultant and, ultimately the Clinical Director
• Ensure learning from incidents and complaints is cascaded within the junior doctor team
• Identify issues with ward based care pathways and contribute to quality improvement initiatives to rectify
• Coordinate ward based-duties amongst the clinical team covering the wards in order to protect time for colleagues to be able to participate in educational opportunities / non-ward based duties (eg clinics)
• In case of difficulties of any kind, they will seek the advice of the appropriate Consultant.
• Undertake to deputise from time to time for absent colleagues
• In exceptional circumstances (emergencies and unforeseen circumstances), perform additional duties
