Full Job Description
Job title: Principal Control & Instrumentation Engineer
Location: Barrow-in-Furness, Filton or Manchester (minimum 2 days on-site per fortnight). We offer flexible and hybrid working arrangements – please speak to your recruiter about options for this role.
What you’ll be doing:
* Develop a functional design for the Vehicle Control solution for SSNA.
* Collaborate with stakeholders to oversee the delivery of the vehicle control solution and strategy.
* Support assurance activities in coordination with the Office of the Chief Engineer.
* Work with the engineering manager to deliver the vehicle control system, reporting progress through agile tools.
* Ensure delivery of the engineering plan on schedule.
* Guide and instruct on engineering methods and processes.
* Develop technical solutions with the Engineering Delivery Team, fostering team development.
* Engage with legacy stakeholders to develop solutions from baseline designs.
Your skills and experiences:
* Experience in designing large-scale C&I systems meeting various standards.
* Managing non-functional requirements like EMC and shock compliance.
* Proficiency in authoring/reviewing design documents such as I/O schedules and interface control documents.
* Degree or equivalent in Engineering, Physics, Maths, or Science.
* Knowledge of control system architecture and communication protocols (e.g., RS-485, PROFIBUS).
* Experience with IEC 61508 – Functional Safety and safety evidence documentation.
* Experience with maneuvering systems from various industries.

The Platform Complex Systems team:
Contribute to the design of the Royal Navy’s next-generation attack submarine, working with legacy and new control technologies, collaborating with stakeholders, suppliers, and the Royal Navy. Relocation support is available for eligible roles.
