Qualifications
- Stay calm under pressure; be the first point of contact for emergency and non‑emergency calls.
- Fast thinking, problem solver; assess situations quickly, ask the right questions, and provide clear, concise information to callers and police officers.
- Handle emotional situations; offer reassurance, stay level‑headed, and guide people through distressing circumstances.
- Excellent communication skills; clear, compassionate, and confident.
- Quick learner; adapt to new computer systems quickly.
What you’ll do as a Police Call Handler
- Answer emergency and non‑emergency calls with professionalism and care.
- Stay calm and focused, guiding callers through urgent and sometimes life‑threatening situations.
- Work as part of a dedicated team that makes a difference in people’s lives every day.
- Handle multiple tasks simultaneously from handling calls from the public, to calling other emergency services and recording crimes.
What you’ll do as a Police Dispatcher
- Dispatch police units in response to emergency and non‑emergency calls.
- Provide real‑time support and clear communication to officers in the field.
- Monitor and prioritise incidents, ensuring the right resources are sent to the right places.
- Handle multiple tasks simultaneously, from tracking police units to updating incident logs.
Shift Patterns
Call Handler – Full Time Pattern: 24/7 (0600‑1500 × 2, 0930‑1930 × 2, 1700‑0200 × 2, 4 Rest Days, 0800‑1700 × 2, 1200‑2200 × 2, 2100‑0600 × 2, 4 Rest Days)
Dispatcher – Full Time Pattern: 24/7 (0600‑1500 × 2, 1500‑0100 × 2, 2100‑0600 × 2, 4 Rest Days, 0600‑1500 × 2, 1200‑2200 × 2, 2100‑0600 × 2, 4 Rest Days)
Part‑time shift patterns are available for both roles and can be discussed at assessment centre and interview.
Salary
Call Handler: Starting at £37,235 (inclusive of shift allowances).
Dispatcher: Starting at £37,234 (inclusive of allowances).
