Job Summary

The Senior Healthcare Support Worker will assist the Registered Nurse in the delivery of safe, high quality clinical care to patients at all times. Will work under direct and indirect supervision of the Registered Nurse and will be provided with appropriate training for the clinical setting in which they are working. Once trained and deemed competent, the post holder will undertake clinical tasks and duties within the scope of this job description. The post holder will work collaboratively within the clinical area to meet the needs of patients and their families, following Group policies and procedures.


Main Duties

* To maintain the highest possible standards of compassionate and professional patient‑centered care with particular attention to privacy and dignity.
* Assist patients with personal care, hygiene and sanitary needs, ensuring privacy and dignity is maintained at all times.
* Assist in meeting patients' nutritional needs, including non‑oral nutritional and fluid intake. Ensure that patients who require assistance at mealtimes have an appropriately coloured tray to identify they need help and are assisted with eating and drinking.
* Where identified in the plan of care, ensure that food and fluid intake and output are accurately documented on appropriate patient charts.
* Assist in skin and pressure area care to prevent pressure ulcers, and under the supervision of registered nurses, help patients move positions to prevent discomfort and/or pressure ulcers.
* Assist patients with safe mobilisation according to their plan of care and seek help from other members of the multidisciplinary team when appropriate.
* Utilise appropriate moving and handling equipment to reduce the risk of injury to the patient and to the support worker.
* Assist in supporting rehabilitation and therapeutic activities for patients as appropriate.
* Assist registered nursing staff in taking and recording vital signs as per the patient's plan of care.
* Communicate any changes in the patient's condition to the nurse / midwife in charge.

Person Specification

Essential
* Basic literacy and numeracy skills
* NVQ/QCF Level 2 Diploma in Clinical Healthcare Support or commitment to undertake and successfully complete training within an agreed timeframe
* Level 2 in English and Mathematics or equivalent
* Understanding of the needs of patients in a care setting
* Sound understanding of the need for confidentiality
Desirable
* IT skills
* Recent study or equivalent relevant qualification
* 2 years experience of working in a care setting or transferable skills, demonstrable keenness and passion for the role
