Senior Occupational Therapist in Stroke

We are seeking an enthusiastic and skilled Occupational therapist to join our Stroke team of AHPs at Southport & Ormskirk NHS Trust. As a Senior Occupational Therapist you will be based at Southport District General Hospital. This permanent full‑time position offers flexible working (including weekend and extended days) and includes structured supervision, support, and opportunities for further training and education.
Responsibilities
* Assess and treat patients within the ward or community setting.
* Assist the Clinical Therapy Manager/Team Leader in service development and provision of quality service.
* Take responsibility for junior staff, delegate duties and provide appropriate support.
* Meet Therapy and Community and Continued Care Service objectives.
* Cover for absences in the Community and Southport & Ormskirk Hospital Trust departments.
* Participate in the weekend rota when required.
* Develop and implement individualized treatment programmes for patients and carers, both inpatient and community.
* Record and report findings following department procedures to maintain communication.
* Share skills and knowledge with other disciplines and patients/carers.
* Coordinate with hospital and community staff to ensure continuity of treatment, facilitate discharge, prevent readmission, and support resettlement.
* Ensure treatments are based on best available clinical evidence.
* Attend ward rounds, case conferences, and goal‑planning meetings.
* Maintain accurate, comprehensive documentation and comply with legal and Trust requirements.
* Collect data and statistics for Trust use and update policies and procedures as appropriate.
* Comply with Health and Safety policies, report incidents through Datix, and inform the occupational therapy team leader.
* Produce information sheets and booklets for patients, improving patient education.
* Provide professional practice education to OT students and support development of other health professionals.
* Plan and deliver continuing professional development, attend postgraduate training, and maintain a Personal Development Plan.
* Participate in clinical audit and departmental initiatives.
* Lead and supervise junior staff, conduct performance appraisals.
* Perform research and ensure compliance with Trust research governance.
* Monitor service demand, report changes, and support ordering of materials and equipment.
* Manage day‑to‑day running of the department in the absence of senior staff.
* Attend OT briefing sessions, give feedback, and inform others as appropriate.
* Assess complex patients requiring physical strength, dexterity, standing, and sitting.
* Handle distressing situations and support juniors in managing these situations.
* Communicate distressing information to patients, carers, or relatives sensitively when outcomes are unmet or patients deteriorate.
* Work effectively in a busy, pressured environment and maintain good working relationships with the MDT.
* Fulfill travel requirements for the post.
Person Specification
Qualification
* Diploma/Degree in Occupational Therapy
* Current HCPC registration
* Evidence of relevant post‑graduate courses/CPD
Knowledge & Experience
* Substantial clinical experience since qualifying, including several rotations at band 5 or higher, and at band 6.
* Experience in specialised field as a band 5.
* Membership or participation in a special interest group.
* Up‑to‑date knowledge of NHS issues, policies, and standards.
Skills
* Excellent communication skills and MDT case‑conference experience.
* Conflict resolution and issue‑resolution abilities.
* Ability to work autonomously and with the MDT.
* Strong time‑management, prioritisation and self‑management skills.
* Adaptability to change in a flexible, diplomatic and positive manner.
