Quality Engineer – Hiscox

We are a modern, agile technology department seeking a motivated professional who will champion quality at every stage of our process, ensuring that requirements are translated into robust tests that validate our technologies meet our ambitious standards.
Role
Within this role you will be responsible for ensuring the quality of our web applications, APIs, and data platforms. This will involve working closely with software engineers and product owners to understand, define, and test the application. You will act as the quality champion, driving quality by design within the squad, ensuring test suites give appropriate coverage to reduce regression defects, and fully testing disaster recovery and fail‑over protocols. You will also collaborate with chapter members (QEs, AEs, SDETs) and influence cross‑discipline squads to embed quality from the outset, upskill programming skills and transform into an Automation Engineer.
What you will be doing
* Design, execute, and document functional test cases, reporting bugs with detailed documentation and tracking resolution.
* Work with the Agile team during planning, development, and release to ensure timely and high‑quality delivery.
* Analyse requirements for features, integrations, and new projects and determine testing needs.
* Collaborate with developers, stakeholders, and QA team members to share test outcomes, discuss strategies, and improve processes.
* Understand end‑to‑end application functionality and act as a Subject Matter Expert within the squad.
* Keep test documentation up to date and accurate to support ongoing delivery cycles.
* Assist Automation Engineers and SDETs in building test automation scripts.
* Work with the wider QE practice to adopt best practices across teams.
* Collaborate with team members in the United Kingdom, Portugal, Poland, and India to deliver value.
Must Haves
* Proven experience in manual testing, including creating test cases, executing tests, and identifying defects.
* Solid experience in Quality Engineering processes and a thorough understanding of testing methodologies (behaviour‑driven testing, unit testing, data‑driven testing).
* Experience creating test artefacts such as Test Plan, Test Strategy, Test Metrics, and reporting.
* Hands‑on experience with test management and reporting tools such as Jira, Azure Test Plans, etc.
* Strong logical thinking skills with a methodical approach to problem solving.
* Experience working in a truly agile style.
* Willingness to take initiative to learn technical skills and scale up to become an Automation Engineer.
* Good team player.
* Fluency in English and excellent communication skills.
Nice to Haves
* Experience writing tests in BDD format.
* Experience with API testing using Postman or related tools.
* Proficient in SQL to develop effective backend database tests.
* Exposure to any test automation tool.
* Understanding of any programming language.
* Exposure to CI/CD pipelines.
Technology
Our technology stack includes web applications developed in C# interacting with backend services (APIs) and backed by Microsoft SQL Server databases. We operate data platforms using Snowflake cloud data warehouse orchestrated with Python code and Prefect for ELT. We maintain a hybrid on‑premises / Azure cloud infrastructure and adopt a cloud‑first/agnostic approach. We use Azure Pipelines for CI/CD, deploy infrastructure with Terraform and Docker, and are integrating AI technologies across our application landscape.
