Purpose of the role

We have an exciting opportunity for a client focussed HR Consultant to be part of an established Education HR service at Browne Jacobson. This is a regional role based in the East Midlands, although national travel will be required. The post reports to the Head of HR Services and is based in the Employment team.

The role will involve providing tailored, comprehensive and pragmatic operational HR advice and support to schools and academies. Commercially focussed, you will help to shape and develop this service by building on our excellent reputation.

Responsibilities

To be referred to in conjunction with the generic job description as well as your personal development plan:

* Building strong professional relationships with schools and academies by developing a sound understanding of their needs
* Provide advice and support on all employee relations issues
* Deliver a professional telephone, email and face to face support to clients, ensuring legal compliance and achievement of service standards
* Liaise with legal colleagues in supporting schools to manage risk and compliance
* Lead ad hoc projects including restructuring and change management on behalf of clients
* Contribute to the development of the business, seeking to maximise new business opportunities
* Ensure that organisational practices are accurately reflective of current employment legislation
* Draft policies, briefings and training material on the full range of HR areas
* Deliver support and training to school and academy managers to enhance their skills, knowledge and understanding of dealing with HR issues
Person specification

Personal Characteristics

* Be willing to travel as part of delivering this national service. Whilst predominantly based in the East Midlands there is likely to be a need to travel further afield
* Have a strong education HR background and experience of complex HR issues including disciplinary, redundancies, dismissals, and change management
* Appreciate the complex employment nature of the education sector and have experience of advising a number of school leaders on HR issues
* Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be achievement focussed
* Have a well-developed understanding of the education sector and a good understanding of local authority HR policies and school terms and conditions
* Be fully CIPD qualified and committed to continuing professional development
* Have a well-developed knowledge of employment law, the practical application of it and the impact this can have within a school
* Have experience of dealing with a varied caseload including capability, sickness and absence management, and grievances
* Have a customer service ethos and a flexible “can do” attitude
* Have the ability to work under pressure and to deadlines and respond promptly to requirements using own initiative
Please note that the expectation is that annual leave is taken during school holidays and not in term time for service continuity reasons.
