We are delighted to be recruiting for a new Civil Engineering Workshop Manager who will be based at the Bloomsbury campus and will lead the operations of the CEGE Civil Engineering workshop. Working closely with academics, researchers and students, the postholder will provide expert technical input and practical support for experimental work. The workshop also contributes to the delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate student projects and supports laboratory operations across all three CEGE sites.
Key responsibilities
 * Leading, managing and developing the Civil Engineering workshop technical team, including apprentices and trainees.
 * Providing expert advice on the design and manufacture of experimental devices, test specimens and complex equipment, with a focus on material selection, performance and manufacturability.
 * Overseeing the fabrication of prototypes, whether fully produced in-house or adapted from commercially available components.
 * Spending several days each week supporting on-site technicians at the PEARL and CAVE laboratories in Dagenham, ensuring consistent technical standards and collaborative working across all CEGE sites.
 * Ensuring compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation, as well as UCL and departmental policies and procedures.
 * Acting as the responsible person for lifting equipment and local exhaust ventilation (LEV), ensuring compliance with LOLER 1998 and PUWER 1998 regulations.
 * Operating a wide range of engineering workshop machinery and tools to manufacture components and assemblies in various materials, including metals, plastics, wood, concrete and composites. Experience with CNC machinery, laser cutters and 3D printers is desirable; training will be provided where necessary.
About You
 * Recognised qualification in engineering such as an HND, HNC or equivalent, or extensive relevant experience gained through your career.
 * Background in high‑tech or precision engineering environments, ideally within higher education or research, with responsibility for the manufacture and assembly of complex devices and the development of innovative experimental systems.
 * Proven ability to lead and develop technical teams, including apprentices and trainees, and to foster a collaborative and inclusive working culture.
 * Sound understanding of health and safety legislation relevant to engineering workshops and laboratories, and ability to ensure compliance with statutory regulations such as LOLER and PUWER.
 * Confidence in the use of traditional engineering workshop machinery including lathes, milling machines, drilling machines, band‑saws and sheet‑metal fabrication tools. Experience with CNC machinery, laser cutters and 3D printers is desirable, with training provided where necessary.
