The University of Glasgow’s School of Biodiversity, One Health & Veterinary Medicine is seeking to appoint a Senior Lecturer/Lecturer in Veterinary Public Health. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the continuing refinement and delivery of Veterinary Public Health (VPH) teaching in the taught programmes of the School of Biodiversity, One Heath and Veterinary Medicine. The School has an international reputation in teaching, clinical services and research and is accredited by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), the European Association of Establishments of Veterinary Education (EAEVE) and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). You will carry out associated tasks as requested by the Head of Division and Head of School to maintain and further the School/College objectives and reputation.
Job Purpose
The postholder will contribute to the delivery of an excellent student experience for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including continuing professional development. The postholder will undertake scholarship to enhance learning and teaching in the School and actively engage in relationships with external stakeholders and so advance knowledge exchange, public understanding and outreach. This is a Post-doctoral role in Veterinary Public Health at the School of Biodiversity, One Health & Veterinary Medicine.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
1. Lead, plan, prepare and deliver VPH teaching sessions, including undergraduate and postgraduate teaching/learning and assessment, and contribute to the delivery of VPH continuing professional development activities.
2. Support the development of creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, in accordance with the University’s Quality Enhancement Strategy.
3. Provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support their learning.
4. Supervise undergraduate student practical work, advising on skills, methods and techniques.
5. Collaborate with colleagues to develop undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
6. Contribute to the ongoing development and design of the undergraduate curriculum.
7. Assist students with difficulties (e.g. learning support/problems).
8. Maintain and develop knowledge in VPH and related aspects of production animal health, attending and actively contributing to national/international events, major research seminars and conferences within VPH.
9. Keep abreast of advancements in relevant technology and their applications, continually updating knowledge and skills in VPH to support teaching and clinical excellence.
10. Actively participate in practical/professional and/or clinical practice bodies related to VPH at national and international level as appropriate.
11. Undertake divisional administrative duties as requested by the Head of School, Head of Division or their delegate.
12. Participate in performance and development review processes, in accordance with University strategy.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge / Qualifications
* Essential: Veterinary degree registerable with the RCVS; comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge across the VPH field.
* For Appointment at Grade 8: Advanced training in research (PhD or equivalent) and evidence of other VPH relevant specialist status (e.g., European or American College diplomate).
* For Appointment at Grade 9: Extensive knowledge and experience of degree course organisation and delivery of VPH teaching to veterinary undergraduate students; membership of an appropriate professional or teaching body (e.g., Higher Education Academy).
Skills
* Essential: Expertise in relevant areas of VPH; excellent interpersonal, organisational, presentation and communication (written and oral) skills; ability to use initiative and independent judgement; ability to work independently and within a team to tight deadlines; proactive, multi‑tasking and high responsibility; ability to accept collegiate responsibilities.
* For Appointment at Grade 9: Ability to provide expert advice to clinicians and external veterinary surgeons; proven time, project and people management skills.
Experience
* Essential: Experience of planning and progressing work activities within professional guidelines or organisational policy; commitment to open research and open educational resources; commitment to supporting career development of colleagues.
* For Appointment at Grade 8: Experience and achievement in the relevant field reflected in an expanding personal academic portfolio; experience of developing and demonstrating teaching and research methods and devising models, techniques, critiques and methods.
* For Appointment at Grade 9: Substantial track record of scholarship and development and delivery of teaching; sustained engagement with current practice and developing knowledge; proven track record in publishing peer‑reviewed international scientific articles.
* Desirable: Working experience on relevant epidemiological and microbiology techniques; full and valid UK driving licence for 2 years (specific requirements for EU/EEA or Non‑UK applicants).
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 7/8/9, £41,064 - £46,049/ £50,253 - £58,225/ £59,966 - £67,468 per annum. This post is full time and open ended. The University requires all employees to be eligible to live and work in the UK.
