About the Role
The Speech & Language Therapy Assistant (SaLTAs) will provide speech, language and communication therapy programmes to children and young people in special school settings and other community sites such as SSUs, nurseries and homes. The role requires delivering individual and group therapy, supporting therapy staff, and maintaining accurate clinical records.
Responsibilities
 * Deliver therapy packages to children and young people with speech, language and communication needs under the guidance of a speech and language therapist.
 * Work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
 * Communicate therapy outcomes and next steps to relevant therapy partners and the therapy supervisor.
 * Communicate sensitive information to parents and carers with an empathic approach.
 * Recognise the boundaries of the role and seek support and guidance where required.
 * Organise therapy appointments and maintain a clear schedule.
 * Assist with delivering training both face‑to‑face and virtually.
 * Offer support to the wider team, including preparing resources for therapy sessions, organising toys and materials, booking therapy groups and training sessions, gathering information and assisting in home visits.
 * Use SystmOne for daily record keeping of all clinical sessions and correspondence.
 * Use Outlook, Word and Teams to keep in touch with service users and colleagues, participate in training and communicate within the team.
Qualifications and Experience
 * Band 3 or Band 4 (depending on experience) as a Speech & Language Therapy Assistant.
 * Previous experience working with children with additional needs and an understanding of AAC.
 * Excellent communication skills and confidence working with parents/carers and educational staff.
 * Strong organisational skills, child‑friendly approach and ability to work independently under instruction.
 * Confident IT skills for daily electronic record keeping and online training delivery.
 * Completion of the NHS Care Certificate – a requirement for all assistant roles.
 * Willingness to travel during the working day; travel to special schools across West Suffolk.
