We are currently recruiting for a Landscaping Specialist to join our team here at SCS Railways JV.
About the Role
The Landscaping Technical Specialist is responsible for ensuring landscape works are delivered to specification, environmental standards, and contractual requirements across the HS2 project.
The role provides independent quality assurance, technical inspection, and supervision of landscape installation and maintenance, including management and monitoring of subcontractors such as Ground Control Ltd responsible for planting, habitat creation, and vegetation management.
The role ensures successful establishment of trees, shrubs, and ecological planting, supporting the environmental commitments of the HS2 programme.
Responsibilities
* Landscape Quality Assurance:
o Inspect and monitor landscape works to ensure compliance with approved drawings, specifications, and environmental commitments.
o Ensure correct plant species, sizes, densities, and locations are installed.
o Inspect planting operations: tree and shrub planting, soil preparation, mulching, staking and guying systems.
o Verify compliance with relevant UK standards, including BS 4428, BS 8545, BS 5837, and British Standards Institution guidance.
* Subcontractor Management:
o Oversee landscape subcontractors delivering works on site.
o Monitor performance of subcontractors such as Ground Control Ltd and ensure compliance with HS2 environmental requirements, site method statements, risk assessments, and planting specifications.
o Undertake site inspections and quality audits of subcontractor work.
o Identify non‑compliance issues and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
o Coordinate planting programmes and maintenance schedules.
* Landscape Establishment and Maintenance:
o Monitor successful establishment of landscape planting.
o Oversee watering regimes, monitor plant health, supervise weed control and mulching, review pruning and formative shaping.
o Ensure replacement of failed plants during the defects period.
Qualifications
* Experience in planting and maintenance.
* Extensive horticulture knowledge.
* Knowledge of construction techniques, sequencing and best practice.
* Initiative based on horticultural practical experience.
* Capability to work independently and collaboratively with integrated team members and external stakeholders.
* Computer competence (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, document control systems, AutoCAD).
* Excellent communication skills and ability to adjust communication style to suit receivers.
* Relevant CSCS card.
* Training in health & safety and environmental management.
Additional Requirements
* Implement and comply with ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, OHSAS 18001:2017, ISO/IEC 27001:2013 and statutory requirements impacting the Joint Venture operations.
* Commit to a zero‑accidents target and continuous improvement.
Company and Context
The role will work on the HS2 project – the UK's new high‑speed rail network. Skanska | Costain | STRABAG (SCS JV) is delivering the HS2 London Tunnels Contract, including twin‑bored tunnels, SCL tunnels, shaft sinking, bridge demolition and reconstruction, service diversions, earthworks and the construction of site compounds.
