Acute Oncology and Cancer of Unknown Primary Clinical Nurse Specialist

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Acute Oncology Service (AOS) at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust for a Band 7 Acute Oncology / Cancer of Unknown Primary Clinical Nurse Specialist. We are looking for an experienced, motivated, and dynamic nurse to join our small, friendly and forward thinking team.


Main duties of the job

The Acute Oncology Team provides early input of specialist care to oncology patients enabling safer and better quality care to patients with complications of treatments or new diagnosis. You would need to possess the skills and confidence to urgently review patients with complications of cancer and ensure appropriate pathways of care are put in place. The aim of the AOS team is to support patients and provide the help clinicians sometimes need in caring for people with a malignancy, including new diagnosis. The role also provides specialist support to patients with Cancer of Unknown Primary through the pathway of care from diagnosis to end of life care.

The post holder will be expected to demonstrate specialist knowledge and experience relating to all aspects of oncological malignancy, experience in a senior nursing role and be educated to first degree level. The AOS team cover both QMC and City sites Monday - Friday and the successful candidate would be expected to be flexible to meet the changing needs of the service in the future.

The post holder will be required to demonstrate the ability to prioritise workloads, use their own initiative and manage a caseload of patients autonomously.

The post holder will be expected to be able to assist in implementing and providing both formal and informal education programmes on the Acute Oncology Service to staff within the Trust.

Job responsibilities

* Work with the Lead Clinician for the AOS and CUP service amongst all relevant members of the MDT. This includes attending regular MDTs and meetings.
* Facilitate communication and coordinated care between primary, secondary and tertiary care providers in relation to acute oncology.
* Establish clinical pathways between primary and secondary care.
* Utilise specialist knowledge and skills and liaise with the multi-disciplinary teams already involved with the new diagnosis and management of patients with cancer.
* Autonomously provide specialist assessment, triage and care to patients with complex acute oncology needs.
* Offer compassionate, sensitive care ensuring physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs are met.
* Work with the CUP team to develop a service for this specialist group of patients, including MDT and outpatient clinics.
* Act as a clinical expert and professional resource for patients, carers and health care professionals.
* Influence patient care through indirect roles of providing specialist education.
* Develop and implement clinical guidelines, protocols and standards.
* Undertake audits and service developments within the AOS.
* Promote joint working and collaborative practices with colleagues, patients, carers, other health and social care professionals and statutory, voluntary and independent organisations to ensure optimum patient management and the timely, smooth transition of patient care.
* Provide professional specialist leadership and effective management of resources, ensuring high standards of nursing care are delivered to all patients requiring input from the AOS.


Training and Qualifications

* NMC registration - adult
* Trained in administration of chemotherapy and experience of side effects
* Clinical history taking / assessment course
* Formal leadership and management training
* Masters Degree


Experience

* Significant post registration band 6 or above within an oncology setting
* Specialist knowledge and experience within oncology
* Leadership and management experience
* Teaching experience
* Previous experience within a CNS role
* Research and audit experience


Communication and relationship

* Prepared to and experience in breaking bad news / sensitive information
* Understand the role of advocacy
* Experience of presenting such as conferences


Analytic and Judgement skills

* Ability to independently assess and interpret signs of symptoms
* Ability to lead and introduce change
* IT literate
* Knowledge and understanding of relevant national policies
* Evidence of autonomous working


Planning and organisation

* Able to organise and prioritise own work load and use own initiative
* Evidence of leading a local project / change


Physical Skills

* Ability to assess and function in a variety of locations
