Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced psychiatrist (Consultants or SAS) to become a Lead Psychiatrist (LP) and work as part of the collective leadership team in the South Care Group (NYY&S), ensuring effective and safe patient care delivered in a person-centred manner with decision-making close to the patient.

Applicants with experience in Adult, Older People, Children and Young People, Learning Disability, and Autism services are welcome to apply. The substantive clinical base will depend on their specialty and available posts at interview. The weekly job plan will be discussed individually and can be flexible.

Main duties of the job

The Lead Psychiatrist will demonstrate Trust values, working within a collective leadership team to ensure patient-centered, effective, and safe care, with decision-making as close to the patient as possible.

They will work within a service tier level of the care group model as part of a collective leadership team (CLT), influencing operational responsibility and clinical pathways, with shared accountability for service quality. They will be the professional lead for doctors within their service, responsible for standards of medical practice across inpatient and community teams, and will lead on quality and safety initiatives.

The Lead Psychiatrist and CLT will maintain a visible, accessible, and authoritative presence in clinical areas to ensure quality care fundamentals.

The post holder will advise on medical matters, lead the medical workforce in their specialty, and ensure ongoing professional development and supervision are in place and accessible for all doctors.

Job responsibilities

The Lead Psychiatrist will uphold Trust values, working within a collective leadership team to ensure patient-centered, safe, and effective care, with decision-making close to the patient.

The post holder will advise on medical matters, lead the medical workforce, and ensure continuous professional development and supervision are accessible for all doctors.

They will collaborate with the CLT to deliver services within an integrated governance framework that is safe, effective, and compliant with standards and policies.

They will act as the link to the Medical Directorate concerning workforce planning and performance management, attend governance groups, and oversee professional supervision and guidance.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

* Medical Degree
* Current GMC registration or equivalent
* Evidence of ongoing professional development

Desirable

* Management and leadership training
* Postgraduate qualifications in leadership or education (e.g., TEWV QIS)
* Certified Leader (or within timescale)
* Specialist register registration

Experience

Essential

* At least 1 year at consultant level or 12 years postgraduate service for SAS doctors
* Experience in relevant specialty
* Leadership in multidisciplinary teams
* Collaboration with external agencies
* Teaching and training experience
* Knowledge of quality improvement and governance
* Research and development awareness

Desirable

* 18+ months at consultant level
* Strategic management experience
* Participation in quality initiatives
* Policy development and organizational change leadership
* Representation at external forums
* Complex HR and financial management within healthcare
