Torbay Council Children’s Services is looking for dedicated, curious, and compassionate newly qualified social workers to join our well regarded ASYE programme in September. We are seeking pro-active, resilient, curious graduates, ideally with previous experience of a statutory Children’s services placement who want to extend their knowledge and skills to meet the Practice Standards for Child and Family Social Workers.

In Torbay, we adopt a Restorative Practice approach in the way we work with children, young people and families. We are pleased to have been awarded Registered Restorative Organisation status, being the first local authority within the UK to have received this. As a newly qualified social worker, on our ASYE programme, you will be able to access our comprehensive Restorative Practice learning opportunity, so you will feel fully equipped to step into practice.

We will be opening our Assessment centre week commencing 1st June 2026. This year we are offering candidates an opportunity to showcase their skills, knowledge, talents and selves in a variety of ways, including interview, presentation and practice-based group discussion.
This post meets the requirements for an Enhanced Criminal Record Check. This will show spent and unspent convictions and adult cautions which have not been filtered in line with legislation, plus any information held by local Police that is considered relevant to the role.

Skills
Essential:
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
* Ability to demonstrate skills in mediation, negotiation and problem solving.
* Able to assess situations with clarity and sensitivity and act professionally in crisis situations.
* Ability to work in an open and challenging way with families.
* Ability to prepare and present reports in a variety of settings.
This role requires the ability to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence and fluency in English.
Knowledge
Essential:
* General knowledge of the range of options available to children, young people and their families.
* Knowledge of appropriate child care legislation and how it affects children and young people.
* Knowledge of current CP practice, framework for Assessment and CLA materials.
* Awareness and understanding of relevant Child Care issues.
* Knowledge and understanding of application of an evidence base in practice.
Experience & Qualifications
Essential:
* Direct work with Children, Young People, Families and professionals.
* Experience of working independently and as part of a team.
* Social Work degree qualification, e.g., Dip SW, CQSW, CSS or equivalent.
