Secondment Opportunity: Specialist Biomedical Scientist – Clinical Biochemistry/Immunology (12 Months)
Applications are invited from suitably qualified HCPC‑registered Biomedical Scientists for a 12‑month secondment within Clinical Biochemistry/Immunology. The successful candidate will hold a BSc in Biomedical Science (or equivalent) and be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Applicants should have relevant experience in Clinical Biochemistry, have completed the IBMS Specialist Portfolio in the relevant discipline, or be able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge, skills, and experience at Band 6 level.
Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD) will be required and assessed at interview.
This secondment provides an excellent development opportunity to gain or consolidate specialist experience within Clinical Biochemistry/Immunology. Applicants must have the support of their current line manager prior to applying.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will be part of a team working in the various sections of a busy fully automated Blood Sciences/Chemical Pathology Department based at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, with additional work at our laboratory at Wycombe Hospital. The department is equipped with modern analysers and has standardised equipment at both sites. The successful candidate will be expected to work cross‑discipline after appropriate training and to participate in the out‑of‑hours shift rota.

Job responsibilities
The duties include, but are not limited to:
* Performing and validating biochemical and immunological assays.
* Operating and maintaining automated analysers.
* Accurate and timely reporting of laboratory results.
* Participating in out‑of‑hours service and shift rota.
* Ensuring compliance with quality systems and procedures.
* Working independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Person Specification
Education & Qualifications
* BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science (or equivalent).
* State registration with HCPC.
* Evidenced CPD.
* Higher Specialist Portfolio.
* Optional: MSc Biomedical Science (or related subject) or Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Scientists.
Experience
* Team‑based laboratory work.
* Minimum of 2 years post‑HCPC registration.
* Ability to work alone during an out‑of‑hours service.
* Problem‑solving and troubleshooting.
* Experience with automated analysis of complex equipment.
* Staff supervision.
* Quality system and procedure implementation.
