The role of a Principal Chemist is to lead the development and execution of innovative cosmetic products from concept to launch, identifying opportunities to push formulation boundaries. They will take ownership for a set of projects working collaboratively with the NPD team & Scale Up Team to ensure an efficient development process, advising on risk in a solution orientated manor. They will support the formulation team in the development of new and existing products right, first time in the most efficient way, being involved in their training and mentoring. The role also involves assisting in all aspects of the technical function, ensuring that strict quality standards are met and contributing to the process of Continuous Improvement.
Key Responsibilities
* Make recommendations to NPD and customers on new product requirements considering brand standards, consumer needs and regulatory requirements.
* Manage own projects, setting priorities, maintaining a project tracker and communicating project status and risk to stakeholders.
* Deputise for Technical Manager when not present on priority management and supporting the chemists and technicians with their projects.
* Be a specialist in your area of expertise, designing and developing efficacious, innovative and commercially viable formulations in the Laboratory.
* Prepare formulation batches, presentations and submission paperwork, maintaining accurate records.
* Ensure formulations are developed in an efficient way, utilising knowledge of formulation types and ingredients and in accordance with business sourcing policies.
* Define and execute appropriate testing on all products to confirm that they meet specification and performance criteria.
* Review & approve stability, compatibility and microbiological records. Support the chemists with their approvals or actions when escalated.
* Work alongside the scale up team to help ensure a smooth transition from Lab to Production, in particular on new innovations and technologies.
* Ensuring that staff training and development is carried out in accordance with SOP’s & WIs
* Leading best practice in compliance to Health & Safety, GMP, GLP and ISO requirements.
* Building good relationships with Suppliers & keeping up to date with legislation requirements.
* Record, monitor and report on KPIs as indicated by line manager.
* Support the Scale Up and QC Teams with problem solving and quality investigations writing reports when required.
* Any other duties requested by the Technical Manager to support the smooth operation of the department.
Role Requirements
* Educated to degree level in a scientific discipline.
* Minimum of 5 years’ experience of formulation of cosmetic products.
* Extensive knowledge of formulation types, ingredient roles and claims.
* Extensive knowledge of manufacturing capabilities and limitations, and vessel types.
* Strong attention to detail, accurate record keeping, project tracking and KPI measurement.
* Ability to prioritise and multi-task to manage a busy workload & support colleagues with theirs.
* Excellent project management & risk management skills with a solution focussed approach.
* Effective communication, presentation and interpersonal skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams in a strong & confident manner.
* Skilled in Excel, Powerpoint, Email and the business technical database.
