Investigator - criminal offences cohort Contract Type Permanent Working Pattern Full time - flexible working may be considered Working Hours 35 hours per week Salary £38,671 per annum for Birmingham and Cardiff, £42,538 for London Location Options Birmingham with part of the week working from home, Cardiff with part of the week working from home, London with part of the week working from home Function Type Investigations Are you an experienced investigator with a strong background in evidence gathering, including witness engagement, and conducting investigations for prosecution in accordance with the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE) and the Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act 1996 (CPIA)? An opportunity has arisen for the right candidate to join the Investigation department as an Investigation Officer (IO), as part of a dedicated team investigating matters in our criminal offences cohort. This is a hybrid role. The criminal offences cohort To protect the public and maintain quality standards in the profession, there are legal restrictions on who can provide certain legal services. The SRA investigates reports of breaches of these restrictions, for example where: An individual pretends to be a solicitor An individual acts as a solicitor when they are not qualified to do so An individual provides types of legal services they are not entitled to provide, or pretends they are entitled to provide these services An individual who is restricted from being involved in legal practice, or who has been struck off the roll of solicitors or suspended, has entered into improper employment arrangements A firm pretends it is authorised by the SRA Where the evidential test and the public interest test is met, the SRA will issue proceedings. Successful proceedings may result in fines or custodial sentences. The work of the team will predominately focus on this cohort, alongside other investigation matters according to capacity and business needs. The successful candidate will: Maintain a caseholding of matters, with oversight of matters throughout the lifetime of the investigation Gather evidence and conduct interviews in a manner compliant with the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE) Work closely with colleagues in Legal and Enforcement to ensure that serious cases are evidentially supported for prosecution. Draft key documents such as outcome letters, warnings, and notices for prosecution Protect the public and enforce high professional standards through constructive engagement with parties, critical and proportionate analysis, and robust decision making. What we are looking for Experience in conducting investigations for prosecution and in compatibility with PACE and CPIA, gained through regulation, law enforcement, or similar. An ability to gather evidence, including conducting witness interviews, analyse information and make sound decisions applying rules, principles, or other decision-making frameworks. Ability to collaborate with, influence, and constructively challenge internal and external stakeholders. Proven experience in managing cases or undertaking investigations and critically analysing information to make recommendations demonstrating risk-based judgment. Excellent drafting skills, with experience of drafting complex documents or letters to a high, professional standard. Effective case management skills with the ability to prioritise competing demands and work to stretching targets. We are recruiting for this role in our Birmingham, Cardiff, and London offices. You will be based in the office nearest to your location, with the expectation of working 1-2 days a week in the office and the remainder of the week from home. The starting salary for this role is £38,671 per annum for Birmingham and Cardiff and £42,538 for London. This role may require occasional travel to conduct on-site interviews; such travel will be arranged in advance and take place in the normal course of work.
