Vacancy Information

This role is within a unit where Surrey Police and Sussex Police work in collaboration, whilst remaining two separate legal entities/employers with different terms and conditions.
Both Surrey Police staff and Sussex Police staff are employed in this unit on their own force terms and conditions.
Successful candidates may be appointed on the terms and conditions of employment of either Surrey Police or Sussex Police, depending on organisational requirements. A discussion will be held with the successful candidate to confirm the details of location, salary, allowances and hours.

The starting salary for this role will usually be at the bottom of the salary range and will be pro-rata if the working hours are less than full time.

The Role & Key Responsibilities

This role is within a 24/7 unit where Surrey Police and Sussex Police work in collaboration, whilst continuing to be two separate legal entities/employers with different terms and conditions. Both Surrey Police staff and Sussex Police staff are employed in this unit on their own force terms and conditions.

This advert is for a current vacancy within the 24/7 Intelligence Unit based at Woking Police Station.

The threats facing Surrey and Sussex are constantly evolving, and offenders continually find new ways of committing crime. The information needed to confront these risks is not always evident. That’s why we need 24/7 Intelligence Researchers to assist with live, fast time development of complex and serious crimes in our counties. These include Spontaneous Firearms Incidents and violent offences including murder, rape, GBH and aggravated burglaries.

24/7 Intelligence Researchers form a key part of the intelligence function, providing initial intelligence development supporting evolving investigations. You’ll identify, interrogate, and assess information from a range of covert and overt information sources. You will be able to quickly and accurately take in information and ask insightful questions to get to the heart of a problem. You will often be required to think outside of the box developing answers that will assist in tackling crime.

You will be working collaboratively with your shift partner on a variety of critical, strategic, and high risk incidents. You will often be under pressure to help build the bigger picture from small pieces of intelligence and threads of data. You will be flexible and creative, and able to communicate effectively both written and verbally your findings to front-line staff and chief officers. Your attention to detail will be crucial in keeping people safe and locking up criminals.

Please note that due to the nature of this job, there will be times you may be exposed to investigations of a distressing nature.

You will be required to work a shift pattern with an average of 36 hours per week. You will receive an anti-social hours payment of £6169 (per year, paid monthly) for unsocial hours worked between 7pm and 7am Monday to Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday.



Key Responsibilities:

24/7 Intelligence Researchers provide fast time intelligence gathering to provide assistance with some of the most serious offences.

Researchers develop and provide real time intelligence, alongside products that support officers and staff in effective decision making around critical incidents and complex problems.

You will be relied upon to provide concise and accurate Information to assist with developing knowledge surrounding the circumstances and establishing threat, harm and risk for attending/investigating officers.

Offences range from volume to organised crime, homicide and other serious crime and strategic issues. Alongside this, we also assist other forces and third party agencies with intelligence requests.

When competent in the role, you will be expected to complete and maintain the Intelligence Professionalisation Programme (IPP) accreditation.

Skills & Experience

Skills

We are looking for candidates with the following essential skills and experience. We will assess your application against these specific criteria, which should be clearly evidenced within your application form:

Essential skills:
- A Levels or equivalent qualification, or with proven and well evidenced experience of crime/intelligence research in a relevant field;
- Previous experience of researching, assimilating and making sense of relevant information from a range of open and closed information sources. This includes the ability to identify potential risks, make links between information, and identify similarities and discrepancies within information.
- Well-developed communication skills both written and verbal, whilst working under pressure and the confidence and ability to discuss on-going requirements and developments with senior officers;
- Ability to manage and prioritise their workload unsupervised and respond flexibly, alongside your shift partner to rapidly changing demands;
- Well-developed computer skills including the ability to learn bespoke systems and a good knowledge of social media.
- The ability to effectively multi-task and use the National Decision Making Model to understand and assess workload priority.

Desirable skills:
- General policing knowledge, including crime classifications and an understanding of developing investigations.
- General understanding of PNC, Niche, SmartStorm, ANPR/NAS and PND.
- Once signed off as competent, be comfortable to assist with training others.
