PSR Rail team are currently recruiting for X2 Freelance Site Engineers in North Essex. This will be working for a Tier 1 Rail Contractor on a multidisciplinary infrastructure project. This is an immediate start!! More information below.
Key Responsibilities
Review design drawings, BIM / 3D models, setting-out sheets and survey information for the depot building, associated tracks, utilities, points, OLE (Overhead Line Equipment) and signalling works.
Establish control networks (datum points, RLs, alignment baselines) on site for building and civil works, track works, OLE foundations, etc.
Carry out setting out of key elements: building foundations/slab, wheel lathe footprint, pit locations, track alignment, platform edges, points, and other fixed infrastructure in accordance with design tolerances.
Monitor and verify alignment and levels during construction: check track slab levels, pit invert levels, foundation RLs, interface with existing depot infrastructure.
Coordinate with surveyors, rigging, track, civils, OLE, signalling and building teams to ensure all setting out is aligned to the design intent and interfaces correctly with the existing depot.
Provide daily / weekly reports of setting-out activities, highlight deviations / non-conformances, propose corrective actions.
Work within rail safety rules (Possession, Signalled Worksite, TRACKSAFE etc.) and comply with depot operational constraints (live fleet, interfaces).
Ensure all setting-out records, as-built coordinates, level checks, and survey data are captured and handed over appropriately.
Liaise with the companies Group's site management, resident engineer, design team and client representatives to resolve setting-out / surveying issues promptly.
Attend design - construction coordination meetings, raise setting-out risks/challenges.
Ensure all works comply with engineering quality assurance, H&S, environmental and rail industry standards.
Required Skills & Experience
Proven experience as a Setting-Out Engineer / Survey Engineer on large infrastructure projects (rail, depot, building, civil), ideally in rail depot or multi-discipline rail infrastructure setting.
Strong surveying background: total station use, establishing control networks, setting out from drawings and models, as-built recording.
Competent in reading design drawings, BIM/3D models, plan/section elevations, track alignment sheets.
Knowledge of rail environment setting-out: track slab, points alignment, OLE foundations, building foundations within a live depot environment is highly desirable.
Understanding of construction tolerances, alignment, levels, structural interface, track geometry.
Good communicator, able to interface with multiple disciplines (civil, rail, track, OLE, signalling, building).
Excellent record-keeping and reporting skills (setting out logs, deviation records, survey certificates).
Ability to work on site with changing constraints (live operations, possessions, tight timescales).
Relevant engineering/survey qualification (HNC, ONC, Diploma or Degree in Civil Engineering / Surveying / Construction).
CSCS (or equivalent) certification, rail safety training (e.g., PTS, RISQS) desirable.
Valid UK driving licence and willingness to travel to site daily.
Contract / Employment Terms
Freelance/contract basis - fixed term for duration of setting-out phase (to be defined) of the project.
Location: Clacton Rail Depot, Essex (with travel to other liaison sites as required).
Hours: Standard site hours with possibility of extended hours / weekend work depending on rail possession demands and schedule.
Reporting to: the companies Group Site Engineer / Survey Lead.
Rate: To be negotiated (based on experience and contract length).
Benefits / Additional Info
Opportunity to work on a technically challenging, multi-discipline rail depot project with significant value and visibility.
Collaborative environment with the companies Group's rail and civil teams delivering a flagship facility for Greater Anglia.
Exposure to rail infrastructure, depot setting works and interface with live operations.
The setting-out engineer will help ensure that the facility opens as planned (Summer 2025 / May-2025 completion target) and meets operational demands.
