Highly Specialist Physiotherapist & Team Leader - Stroke Unit

The Physiotherapy Team Leader for stroke is a new exciting role which is integral to the delivery of high- quality stroke therapy services at Airedale NHS Foundation Trust, following significant investment in inpatient stroke services in the Trust. The post-holder will work alongside two other team leaders for Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy.

The Stroke Unit provides inpatient multi-disciplinary therapy to patients following a stroke or other neurological event. Rehabilitation is provided by a team of occupational therapists, physiotherapists and therapy assistant practitioners. The service is part of the integrated stroke pathway and aims to be integrated with the community-based rehabilitation which is provided by the Community Stroke Team (CST) for up to 6 weeks following discharge


Main duties of the job

The postholder will provide leadership and line management for the Stroke Therapy Team across the Stroke Pathway & will work in partnership with the other Stroke Pathway Leaders and Clinical Lead for Stroke. Working with the clinical lead, the postholder will be responsible for planning, coordinating, delivering and evaluating clinical case work within the Inpatient Stroke service

The postholder will provide evidence based, highly specialist knowledge and skills to the Stroke unit, working in collaboration with the leaders of the Community Stroke Team to provide a seamless, integrated, rehabilitation service and to continue to develop the Stroke Pathway.

They will deputise for leaders on the Community Stroke Team when required as well as deputising for the clinical lead, and will provide a key role in partnership working with patients, carers, the MDT, and wider statutory, private and voluntary sector services. Additionally, the postholder will take responsibility for effective functioning of the teams throughout the stroke pathway, leading on quality improvements across the Stroke Pathway, in collaboration with the Clinical Lead and Therapy Manager.

The post holder has responsibility for staff and student training and development. In pursuing the duties of the role, the post holder will ensure compliance with the NHS Constitution and the Trust's Right Care strategy

Person Specification


Qualifications

* Degree or equivalent pre-registration award in Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy
* State registrations with the Health Care Professions Council
* Recent post graduate courses relevant to the management of Stroke patients
* Recent post graduate courses in Leadership/management
* Completion of course in Professional Practice education
* MSc or PhD in a relevant subject
* Certificate in Managing Health Services or equivalent
* Recent post graduate courses or experience relevant to stroke therapy
* Successful completion of a Professionally validated specialist course


Experience

* Comprehensive, relevant and recent experience working in a wide variety of clinical areas
* Experience in assessment, treatment and management of people recovering from Stroke. Experience of multidisciplinary team working
* Experience of multidisciplinary guideline development, implementation and audit
* Experience of clinical supervision both as supervisee and supervisor
* Experience of supervising other staff members and conducting annual reviews
* Recent experience of student training
* Experience of using telehealth, video conferencing and other remote methods of clinical practice.
* Recent experience of leadership /management role
* Experience of taking part in or leading on Projects/ service improvements
* Experience of taking part in or leading an audit or research project
* Experience in dealing with Human Resource issues such as recruitment and retention, performance management, sickness and annual leave
* Experience of working in partnership approach working in collaboration across system barriers


Knowledge

* Specialist level of knowledge, understanding and clinical reasoning skills to support expert clinical practice in rehabilitation and presentation of Stroke patients.
* Knowledge of the roles of other professionals and the principles of partnership working in stroke rehabilitation
* Knowledge of clinical standards and ability to implement and audit these in the team
* Knowledge of the principles of clinical governance, audit and research
* Knowledge of the principles of student-centred learning and reflective practice
* Knowledge of local systems


Skills

* Ability to work as of a part team
* Excellent planning and organisational skills and ability to facilitate these skills in others
* Ability to set objectives for self and team and evaluate achievement of these
* Excellent communication and counselling skills including observation, listening, motivational interviewing and empathy
* Excellent interpersonal skills for developing complex working relationships, expressing opinions constructively, seeking consensus and maintaining networks
* Highly developed negotiation and problem-solving skills in complex situations and ability to facilitate these skills in others Excellent analytical and reflective skills
* Excellent presentation skills, both written and verbal, and ability to adjust style and content as appropriate
* Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
* Ability to chair meetings and facilitate workshops effectively
* Ability to use all applications of Microsoft Office
* Ability to use System One
