Research Associate / Senior Research Associate in Consumer Energy Resources (x2 positions)
Location: Kensington – Sydney, Australia. This position is fixed-term until December 2027.
This opportunity is with the School of Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy Engineering (SPREE) at UNSW and collaborates with industry partners and across UNSW faculties via the Collaboration on Energy and Environmental Markets (CEEM). CEEM undertakes interdisciplinary research on the economics and environmental sustainability of electricity systems, including the Australian National Electricity Market and other electricity industries worldwide.
Responsibilities
* Contribute to one or more projects using energy systems data analysis and modelling and develop open-source tools (e.g., Python, R, Matlab, Excel) to support the energy transition of Consumer Energy Resources (CER).
* Handle and analyse large real-world CER datasets (rooftop PV, batteries, EVs).
* Query and manipulate large datasets from databases and platforms (AWS, SQL, Azure).
* Develop algorithms to analyse CER compliance with Australian standards (AS 4777.2020.2, CSIP-AUS, IEEE) and curtailment under the Emergency Backstop Mechanism (EBM).
* Develop open-source tools to assist DNSPs and network operators in CER operations planning and management.
* Create data visualisations to understand CER value and address challenges with increased CER penetration in distribution networks and at the system level.
* Engage with industry partners through regular meetings, presentations and industry reports.
Qualifications
Level A – Research Associate
* A PhD or equivalent research experience in a related discipline, and/or relevant work experience.
* Experience in technical and economic modelling of renewable generation or distributed energy resources, including energy storage, demand-side participation, and implications for distribution networks and system operation/planning.
* Expertise in analysis and modelling using large energy-related datasets, including formal statistical analysis and machine learning techniques.
* Experience with developing and managing large energy datasets is desirable.
* Independent researcher with initiative, ability to drive tasks, and proactive problem solving.
* Interest in developing open-source modelling tools for broader stakeholders.
* Experience interacting with electricity networks, market institutions and industry in Australia is desirable.
* Committed to keeping up-to-date with disciplinary knowledge and developments.
* Proven ability to conduct high-quality academic research with limited supervision and to publish and present results.
* Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team and build effective stakeholder relationships.
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills with diverse groups.
Level B – Senior Research Associate (in addition to Level A requirements)
* All Level A requirements, plus demonstrated excellence in research outcomes with high impact and potential for research leadership.
* Experience maintaining open-source code repositories and building networks with industry and external researchers to generate funding or collaborative projects.
* Excellent communication and networking skills with students and staff from diverse backgrounds.
* Proven ability to work in a team and collaborate across disciplines.
Other details
* Salary: Level A – AUD$113,911 to $121,838 per annum + 17% super; Level B – AUD$127,947 to $150,830 per annum + 17% super.
* Full-time, fixed-term until December 2027.
* Visa/working rights: Applicants must have valid working rights in Australia. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
