Head of Operations – Surgical Specialties
Location: Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Liverpool (LUH) – Band 8c.
Salary: £76,965 – £88,682 per annum. Contract: Permanent. Working hours: 37.5 hours per week (on call). Closing date: 11/11/2025 23:59.
Job Overview
This post is open to employees of the five LAASP organisations (Clatterbridge Centre, Liverpool Heart & Chest Hospital, Liverpool University Hospitals, Liverpool Women’s Hospital, or Walton Centre). The Head of Operations will lead the Surgical Specialties Care Group covering Breast & Endocrine, Renal Transplant and Urology.
Key responsibilities include efficient day‑to‑day operational performance, ensuring high quality patient care, safety processes, operational standards and continuous improvement across the group.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead, shape and deliver the Care Group’s strategy in partnership with Division and Trust leadership.
* Drive operational performance and planning with Clinical Directors and Lead nurses/Advanced Healthcare Professionals.
* Accountable for the Care Group’s financial performance, budgets, pay spend and QEP targets.
* Represent the group in divisional and Trust meetings, deputising for the Divisional Director as required.
* Develop and implement patient‑centred clinical operational strategy and plans, maintaining compliance with legislation and governance.
* Provide a visible, authoritative presence supporting service prioritisation and resource planning.
* Lead change initiatives, workforce development, appraisal and accountability frameworks.
* Maintain high quality staff engagement, fostering an open and inclusive culture that encourages excellence.
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
* Coaching & values‑led leadership style, encouraging engagement and empowerment.
* Excellent communication, mediation, negotiation, consultation and facilitation skills.
* Problem‑solving with a solution‑focused, persuasive approach.
* Analytical ability to interpret data, manage risks and make judgements under tight deadlines.
* Experience of business‑planning processes in a clinical setting.
* Ability to coordinate complex activity to meet performance targets within financial controls.
* Strong IT literacy, including standard office software and bespoke NHS systems.
* Capacity to manage multiple priorities in a demanding, unpredictable environment.
* Degree level or equivalent extensive experience; management qualification or MBA preferred.
* Senior level healthcare delivery experience with responsibility for operational delivery, people management, budgeting and achieving performance targets.
* Understanding of NHS principles, governance, budgeting and workforce information systems.
Desirable Criteria
* Audit skills to apply findings to practice improvement and business cases.
* Innovative mindset for new ways of working that meet patient care and service needs.
* Knowledge of NHS governance arrangements and standards.
