Dr Simmers, Dr Downer, Dr Macpherson, Dr Sullivan and Dr Waugh are looking for a GP Retainer to join our team.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and forward thinking GP to join our team to increase our workforce in light of increased investment in primary care from Scottish Government. We are an enthusiastic, supportive team and a progressive and dynamic partnership located in the desirable area of Blackhall in the City of Edinburgh. Our existing GP team consists of five Partners and three salaried GPs. In addition, we have a blended team of one ANP, one Practice Nurses and two Phlebotomists. We have a strong management team plus two administrative staff and six receptionists and we are supported on site by 2 practice pharmacists and pharmacy technician.
We are seeking a GP Retainer for up to 4 sessions a week starting June 2026 under the Scot GP Retain and Sustain Scheme, ideally either Tues / Friday or Monday/Thursday working pattern. This scheme provides a safe and protected environment to maintain a GPs skills and support this GP to thrive in general practice with mentorship and peer support. We welcome applicants who are already approved to the scheme as well as new applicants, as well as newly qualified or soon to be qualified GPs.
We aim to deliver a holistic approach to the care of our patients and have a real commitment to the wider community. The duty GP is well-supported by the ANP who carries out the majority of any home visits. We also provide medical cover to a private nursing home and are strategically positioned in leadership and quality improvement within the NW Tower Cluster. In recent years we have strived to manage our workload in a progressive and sustainable way to maintain well-being and promote resilience.
The successful applicant will benefit from:
1. Competitive salary (£10 176 per session plus 26/27 DDRB uplift reviewed annually for a 4-hour 10 min sessions), MDDUS fees paid

3. 6700 patient list size - a lower than average list size per FTE and significantly better than average availability of appointments
4. ANP support with duty sessions shared pro rata, no lone working. Duty doctor sessions have a capped number of clinical contacts and workload capacity message is implemented when cap reached as per BMA Workload Guidance 2025
5. Routine session of 7 face to face appointments, 1 emergency (on the day triaged by reception) Face to face appointment, 1 GP bookable review appointment, 1 telephone appointment, 5 (capped) special requests and sessional share of Docman
6. Duty doctor sessions allocated on a pro-rata basis, when retained GP works a 5 hr duty doctor session, a routine session in the same week will be proportionally reduced by 50 minutes.
7. Practice Pharmacy team action majority of special requests and discharges, GP special requests capped per session
8. Well-functioning Docman workflow triage to limit to around 15-20 per session on average
9. Highly efficient and organised administrative team
10. A friendly supportive working environment
11. Regular in-house clinical meetings twice a month and MDT meetings with palliative care, community mental health team quarterly. Attendance to this meeting is in protected time (appointments blocked) or paid as extra if attended outside normal working day. Quarterly PLT sessions for wider team learning.
12. 6 weeks annual leave and 1 week study leave plus pro rata public holidays
13. Lead practice for local nursing home regular ward rounds with designated GPs. Candidates should be willing to be involved in nursing home rota.
