Job Description
Company: Seeder Heights – R&D Tax Relief & Innovation Support for UK SMEs
About Us
Seeder Heights is a boutique consultancy dedicated to helping UK SMEs unlock the value of their innovation through R&D tax relief. We combine technical expertise with a warm, human approach — making the R&D process clear, supportive, and genuinely impactful for the businesses we serve.
As we continue to grow, we’re looking for an experienced Freelance Financial R&D Tax Consultant to support our expanding client base and help deliver accurate, compliant, and high‑quality R&D claims.
Role Overview
You will be responsible for analysing financial data, identifying qualifying expenditure, and preparing the financial components of R&D tax relief claims. You’ll work closely with our founders and the Account Management team, technical consultants, and clients to ensure claims are robust, compliant, and aligned with HMRC’s evolving guidelines.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys autonomy, has strong financial acumen, and understands the nuances of the R&D tax landscape.
Key Responsibilities
* Review client financial records to identify qualifying R&D expenditure
* Calculate eligible costs across staff, subcontractors, consumables, software, and cloud services
* Prepare financial summaries and supporting schedules for R&D claims
* Ensure all calculations align with HMRC guidance, including the merged scheme and ERIS
* Collaborate with technical writers to align financial and technical narratives
* Support clients in gathering required documentation and evidence
* Assist with HMRC enquiries or follow‑up questions when needed
* Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of R&D legislation, thresholds, and compliance expectations
Required Skills & Experience
* Consulting Experience: 1–2 years in consulting or R&D Tax, with backgrounds from diverse industries welcomed.
* Proven experience preparing the financial elements of R&D tax relief claims
* Strong understanding of HMRC’s R&D rules (SME, RDEC, merged scheme, ERIS)
* Excellent financial analysis and data‑handling skills
* Ability to interpret accounts, payroll data, and cost breakdowns
* Strong attention to detail and accuracy
* Clear communication skills — able to explain financial concepts simply
* Experience working with SMEs across multiple sectors (preferred)
* Ability to work independently and manage multiple deadlines
Personal Qualities
We’re looking for someone who is:
* Detail‑oriented and financially meticulous
* Warm, approachable, and client‑focused
* Proactive and comfortable working autonomously
* Honest, transparent, and committed to high‑quality work
* Able to collaborate smoothly with technical and non‑technical colleagues
What We Offer
* Flexible, remote freelance work
* Competitive project‑based rates
* A supportive, collaborative working relationship
* Opportunities to work with innovative UK businesses
* A chance to grow with a consultancy that values clarity, integrity, and long‑term impact
