About The Role
Balfour Beatty are looking for a Project Design Controls Manager to join their Power T&D business in Scotland, focused on our Skye 132kV reinforcement project.
Role Purpose
Monitor design package status for approval, procurement, or construction, ensuring compliance with scheduled work tasks, contract requirements, and programmed plan.
Track and highlight changes, implementing impact assessments, risk reductions, and agreement implementations.
Define and report on design team personnel and the organisation’s progress according to the Design and Engineering Management Plan, and assist the EMs (Design Delivery) in monitoring provision of assured design.
Oversee the work of a planner, provide the SEM (DC) with input and cost‑linked measurement data to enable detailed design progress based on earned value and end cost/time to complete forecasts.
Capture and integrate current and forecast programme, budget, cost, and risk at asset and sub‑asset level.
Ensure visual performance metrics are set up to assist the Project Team in timely delivery and improvement of performance.
Effectively use IT and systems as a key enabler for gathering and timely, accurate reporting on project performance.
What you'll be doing
* Reporting to the Technical Director and working with Engineering Managers, Commercial team, and Suppliers.
* Defining and reporting on design team personnel and organisational progress in accordance with the Design and Engineering Management Plan.
* Assisting the EMs (Design Delivery) in monitoring the provision of assured design.
* Overseeing planner work, normal progress monitoring, and reporting to provide cost‑linked data.
* Capturing and integrating current and forecast programme, budget, cost, risk at asset and sub‑asset level.
* Setting up visual performance metrics to aid timely delivery.
* Using IT and systems efficiently for accurate reporting.
Who we're looking for
Qualities and experience desirable
* Appetite for contributing to management of project by operation of Design & Engineering Management Plan (managing staff to carry out requirements, maintaining registers and key schedules).
* Willingness to understand the events that initiate, and the methods used to demonstrate, delay or change entitlement.
* Good time management skills and dependable provision of routine reporting.
Experience of
* Measuring progress and reporting against Gantt charts & P6 programmes.
* Managing (construction) works >£25 million per year.
* Managing subcontractors or suppliers – chairing progress meetings, certifying stage/monthly payments, delay recovery.
* Construction or manufacturing in ISO9001 QA environment, working in accordance with Project Execution Plan, Construction Phase Plan or accredited Quality System.
* Planning & project control services within large complex environments in the construction and engineering industry.
* CDM 2015 (&2017) requirements, roles, responsibilities.
* Risk and opportunity management.
* NEC3 contract documents.
* Management experience in this role is directly relevant to those seeking APM and Prince qualifications.
* This is an office‑based post with daily interaction with peers – requiring some presence on project site for meetings and workshops on an occasional basis.
