Special Educational Needs Tutor

Job Description

The Special Educational Needs (SEN) Tutor provides tailored educational support to children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities. The role involves assessing individual learning requirements, planning and delivering bespoke teaching sessions, and monitoring progress to ensure positive educational outcomes. The tutor works closely with families and educational settings to promote inclusive learning and foster confidence and independence in learners.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Assess the educational needs of learners with a variety of special educational needs and disabilities.
Develop and implement personalised learning plans to address individual goals and challenges.
Deliver one-to-one or small group tuition sessions in line with the learner’s specific requirements.
Utilise a range of teaching resources and strategies to engage and motivate learners effectively.
Regularly review and record learner progress, adapting teaching approaches as necessary to meet evolving needs.
Communicate effectively with families, carers, and educational professionals to support continuity of learning.
Maintain accurate and confidential records of sessions and learner development.
Stay informed about current best practises, legislation, and guidance relating to special educational needs and disabilities.
Support development of learner independence, self-esteem, and social skills.
Adhere to safeguarding policies and procedures to ensure learner safety at all times.

Required Qualifications

Minimum Level 3 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning or equivalent.
Recognised qualification or training relating to Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check clearance.

Education

A relevant qualification in education, childhood studies, or a related discipline is desirable.
Continued professional development in SEND teaching strategies and approaches.

Experience

Proven experience working with children or young people with special educational needs in an educational or care setting.
Experience in delivering individualised learning sessions and tracking learner progress.
Familiarity with a range of SEND conditions including, but not limited to, autism spectrum disorders, dyslexia, and behavioural challenges.

Knowledge and Skills

Strong understanding of SEND legislation, frameworks, and best practise.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build rapport with learners and families.
Ability to create a positive and supportive learning environment.
Competence in planning, organising, and adapting teaching materials to suit diverse learning needs.
Patience, empathy, and resilience when working with learners facing challenges.
Good record-keeping and administrative skills.
Ability to work independently and manage time effectively within a part-time, temporary role.

Preferred Qualifications

Teaching Assistant qualification or experience.
First Aid at Work certification.
Experience with assistive technology and digital learning resources.

Working Conditions

Work is primarily based within educational settings or the learner’s home environment.
Part-time hours with some flexibility required to meet learner needs.
Occasional travel within Oxfordshire and surrounding areas may be necessary.
Work involves close, supportive interaction with learners requiring additional assistance.
Compliance with safeguarding and health and safety standards is mandatory.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
