We are a team of engineers and technicians that design and/or manage the design of repairs on a diverse range of our historical assets to keep our canals open and alive. We provide the designs of technical solutions, preparing specifications and briefing documents mainly for our external Contractors and Consultants. Our works are focussed on conserving and enhancing our precious waterways for future generations.
Our role is to provide designs to maintain, repair and rebuild the Charity's infrastructure to enable visitors to safely enjoy our canals and rivers, and safeguard them for future generations. Our aim is to develop efficient and innovative engineering solutions to the multitude of challenges we face maintaining our waterways and infrastructure day to day.
Location and coverage
The Senior Engineer vacancy will be offered on a remote working basis, with a requirement to attend our main hub spaces as and when required for team working and collaborative meetings. Travel throughout the regional waterway network will also be expected to enable site visits and meetings.
Relevant Hubs: Ellesmere Port & Burnley.

About the role
Our Engineers are important to the success of the Canal & River Trust. The role will involve designing and contributing to the planning of repairs on a diverse range of historical assets associated with the canal network. As one of our civil engineers you will complete designs of technical solutions, prepare specifications and briefing documents for our in-house and external construction teams.
These are extremely varied, interesting and challenging roles. Whether you are coordinating with stakeholders, delivering innovative solutions, helping to define standards and procedures, or working with our teams on the ground; you will be working to conserve and enhance our navigable waterways for future generations; keeping our canals open and alive.
Key accountabilities:

* Review of background and supporting information for multiple projects across the Trust’s network.
\t
* Information gap analysis and collation of additional information through research of freely available information and speaking with internal (Trust) and external specialists and stakeholders.
\t
* Undertaking site visits, including engaging with local teams, specialist contractors and early contractor involvement site visits
\t
* Considering conceptual options that are appropriate and proportional to each individual project.
\t
* Preparing cost estimates for each concept option using the Trust’s cost estimating tools with support from our Cost Intelligence team.
\t
* Assessment of concept options, risks and opportunities and preparing summary reports for review by the Project Sponsor.
\t
* Investigate and develop cost effective design and construction solutions ensuring best value, considering user requirements and whole life costs.
\t
* Prepare and deliver presentations of the preferred concept solutions at Governance Gateway 2 (Option Selection stage) using the Trust’s templates.

* Design and specify engineering solutions as Designer for works in accordance with CDM 2015.
