Blood Production Officer (Known as HHTO)

As a Higher Healthcare Technical Officer (HHTO), you will help make sure hospitals receive the right blood components and tissues at the right time. You will work with a supportive team to receive, check, store and issue products safely, follow clear procedures, and keep accurate records. You will also monitor equipment and storage temperatures, prepare urgent and emergency orders, and support and train colleagues as you grow your own skills. Your careful work helps protect patients and supports clinicians to save and improve lives every day.


Main duties of the job

* Make a direct difference to patients by safely receiving, checking, storing and issuing blood components and tissues to hospitals.
* Use your attention to detail to validate products, complete checks, and maintain clear paper and computer records to required standards.
* Support urgent care by preparing emergency orders and meeting tight timeframes when demand is high.
* Help keep quality high by monitoring storage temperatures, responding to alarms, and reporting incidents and defects to the right person.
* Operate and look after equipment safely, including more complex equipment that needs calibration or monitoring (such as an irradiator).
* Reduce waste by managing stock carefully, selecting the right products to meet requests, and maintaining a full audit trail for discarded items and recalls.
* Contribute to a positive team culture by sharing ideas, taking part in meetings, and helping improve processes and procedures.
* Learn and progress by taking part in training, supporting colleagues, and helping validate new equipment, processes or techniques.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* Or extensive experience working in a logistics or supply chain environment.
* Or equivalent extensive experience of routine NHSBT procedures and an understanding of non-routine procedures.


Experience

* Communicate clearly and respectfully, both in writing and face to face.
* Work well as part of a team and build positive working relationships.
* Prioritise a busy workload, stay organised, and keep accurate records with close attention to detail.
* Use basic IT confidently, including keyboard skills and everyday computer programmes.
* Read and follow written instructions and complete basic calculations.
