Locally Employed Doctor - Higher in Acute Medicine (BHH)

We are looking for enthusiastic Locally Employed Acute Medicine Doctors (Higher) who have a passion to deliver excellent care to patients at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital. Effective management of the acute, unselected medical workload is a major priority for the Trust, and we are looking to recruit LED (H) who will help us to deliver high quality care by working within and alongside the existing Acute Medicine teams.

The acute, unselected medical take is managed and delivered by Acute Medicine teams. Our department includes a Medical Assessment Unit (MAU), Same Day Emergency Care Unit (SDEC) along with short stay and base wards.

This is a fixed term post based at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital. This position requires the post holder to work at Locally Employed Doctor (Higher) level within Acute Medicine which is equivalent to SpR 3 and above.


Main duties of the job

Our LEDs play a crucial role within the Acute and General Medical you will attend daily Consultant led ward rounds in all acute medicine areas including the Emergency Department and SDEC. Key responsibilities include:

* Shared ward rounds of the acute medicine footprint.
* Assessment of new patients within the Emergency Department, MAU & SDEC unit
* Full participation In the Acute Medical rota & General Internal Medicine rota which will include some On-call Shifts, weekend and evening work.
* Participation in, and contribution to; departmental teaching, quality improvement and governance programmes.

All posts are full-time with out-of-hours rota participation, up to a maximum of 48 hours as per the European Working Time Directive, with prospective cover for annual leave, study leave and bank holidays.

Job responsibilities

* All LEDs (H) are managerially accountable to the Clinical Service Lead.
* LED (H) are key members of the Acute Medicine Team and are responsible for leading changes to services that will improve patient experience.
* The post holder will attend a Trust Induction followed by departmental induction to ensure s/he is has access to various IT systems and policies and protocols needed in day-to-day work. If required then we will provide opportunities to shadow the team for an agreed period before taking up clinical responsibilities
* An assessment will be made at the interview about the training and development needs of the doctor including their short- and long-term career objectives.
* The post holder will have access to a named consultant for clinical and educational Supervision who will help to identify learning needs, develop a Personal Development Plan and provide guidance on career development and enhancement.
* The post holder will have opportunities to meet their supervisor on regular basis to discuss the progress in various areas, discuss reflections written by them and to seek feedback on their performance.
* The post holder will have access to the trust eportfolio to record CPD and workplace-based assessments.
* All doctors are invited attend regular Resident Doctors forum to discuss any issues or to give feedback on their working environment and learning process.
* Opportunities to meet the educational lead within the department for any issues related to learning and career progression
* There is a requirement for annual appraisal with an approved appraiser in the trust. More information on this can be provided after commencement in the job.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* Full GMC registration
* Recognised medical degree


Experience

* Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies in line with GMC standards.
* Minimum of 4 years full time post graduate training (or its equivalent Pro-Rata), or equivalent experience.
* Able to demonstrate basic clinical knowledge appropriate to level of responsibility
