We are recruiting a passionate and skilled Substance Misuse Nurse to join a respected, forward-thinking addictions charity based within an acute hospital setting in West London. This is a Monday to Friday, 9–5 role offering a salary of up to £43,500, plus £4,133.14 Inner London Weighting and an excellent benefits package.
This role offers the chance to make a genuine difference to people affected by drug and alcohol use, working at the frontline of acute care. As part of a supportive multidisciplinary team, you will deliver specialist clinical interventions within the hospital while ensuring patients receive the right support beyond discharge.
About the Substance Misuse Nurse role You will act as a vital link between the acute hospital environment — including A&E and inpatient wards — and community substance misuse services. The role focuses on advanced assessment, harm reduction, withdrawal management, and coordinated discharge planning for patients whose hospital admission is linked to alcohol or drug use.
Key responsibilities include:
Delivering specialist clinical interventions to reduce alcohol- and drug-related hospital admissions
Conducting comprehensive assessments and managing withdrawal safely
Using recognised tools such as COWS and CIWA-AR to inform clinical decision-making
Providing expert advice and guidance to hospital staff around substance misuse management
Working closely with A&E, inpatient teams, psychiatry liaison, and dual-diagnosis services
Contributing to MDT discussions and individualised care planning
Supporting safe discharge pathways into community-based services
About you You will be a compassionate, confident Substance Misuse Nurse who is comfortable working with complexity and able to engage patients in a non-judgemental, trauma-informed way.
Essential criteria:
First-level Registered Nurse with a current NMC PIN
Relevant post-registration clinical experience
Experience working with substance misuse patients in settings such as A&E, acute hospitals, prisons, or community services
Practical experience using COWS and CIWA-AR
Strong understanding of harm reduction and health promotion
Ability to complete detailed assessments, care plans, and clinical documentation
Excellent communication skills and confidence working within MDTs
