North Cumbria Integrated Care is looking for a dynamic and motivated Consultant Gastroenterologist to join our team of consultant gastroenterologists and gastrointestinal surgeons. We aim to provide an integrated digestive diseases service across North Cumbria. The North Cumbria GI Service is a new, cohesive, and integrated department combining gastroenterology, endoscopy, upper GI, hepatobiliary, colorectal, and emergency GI surgery.
The successful candidate will join a team of gastroenterologists supported by nurse specialists in IBD & hepatology across the Trust. The service will focus on complex inpatient work at the Carlisle site, with elective outpatient services (endoscopy and outpatient clinics) provided by the entire team across the Trust. Sub-specialty interest will be encouraged where it complements the department and Trust’s service needs.
You must be on the Specialist Register in order to be eligible for appointment to this level of post.
Main duties of the job
The department has two dedicated GI wards within the Cumberland Infirmary at Carlisle for the treatment of inpatients. The plan is to co-locate all GI areas in the near future. There is a dedicated 4-room endoscopy unit at The Cumberland Infirmary and the new endoscopy unit at West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven has 2 dedicated rooms in a new, state-of-the-art facility. There is also a specialist GI physiology lab on both sites.
We currently provide a consultant-of-the-week service for our inpatients, a 24/7 GI bleed rota, and specialist services in IBD, Hepatology, HPB, Bowel Cancer screening, and complex polypectomy. Endoscopy services are provided across our two acute sites in Carlisle and Whitehaven. A full range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including ERCP, are available. Our new £15M, 5-room, state-of-the-art JAG-accredited Endoscopy Suite opened in March 2025.

Person Specification
Qualifications and Training
* Full GMC Registration
* CCST/CESR Specialist Registration
* Postgraduate qualification in gastroenterology
Skills and Experience
* Clinical experience and competence in gastroenterology
* Ability to provide therapeutic endoscopy for GI bleeding
* Excellent communication skills with patients, colleagues, managers and other staff
* Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
* Subspecialty expertise in gastroenterology or endoscopy
