About the job
The UK Sovereign Operations team in Google Public Sector delivers, operates, and secures private cloud services. As an Infrastructure Operations Engineer, you will be part of a team that deploys and operates our private cloud services for critical customers in the UK. You will deploy new infrastructure, launch features and updates, troubleshoot problems, and manage incidents. In line with Google’s standard engineering practices, you will automate tasks, manage incidents, and conduct retrospectives to avoid repeat problems. You will work with local support staff and reach out to Google’s product teams for assistance. This role requires troubleshooting technical problems, updating playbooks, advocating customer issues, occasional non‑standard work hours, and participating in an on‑call rotation.
Minimum qualifications
* Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field such as Computer Networking, Information Security, or equivalent practical experience.
* 5 years of experience in security engineering, DevSecOps, or platform engineering roles.
* Experience with deployment and orchestration technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes, Mesos, OpenStack, Puppet, Chef, Salt, Ansible, Jenkins).
* Experience with Unix/Linux operating systems internals and administration or networking and troubleshooting.
* Eligibility to obtain UK Developed Vetting (DV) security clearance; British Citizenship is required.
Preferred qualifications
* Experience with standard IT security practices (encryption, certificates, key management, HSMs, or specialist security equipment).
* Experience designing, building, and deploying cloud‑based solution architectures.
* Customer‑focused execution and advocacy in cross‑functional environments.
* Team collaboration on process design, project implementation, and cross‑functional group leadership.
Responsibilities
* Build, configure and deploy new compute, network, storage and specialist security infrastructure, ensuring correct configuration and bringing it into service per Google’s playbooks.
* Resolve escalations and issues, improve customer experience, and drive initiatives.
* Manage the health and performance of the environment with observability tools and maintain and update platform features.
* Participate in a 24/7 on‑call rotation for incident response escalation within SLA.
* Provide technical implementation support in customer environments, including guidance on feasibility of cross‑product integrations.
