Job Details
Title: Nuclear Engineer
Salary range: £35,000 to £50,000 per annum, depending on experience.
Locations: Bristol, Gloucester, Glasgow, Leatherhead, Burton or Manchester.
Working pattern: Flexible hybrid – time split between office, client sites and working from home.
Closing date: 31st December 2025 (early application encouraged).
Responsibilities
* Apply engineering skills to projects covering design, construction, operation, maintenance, defueling and decommissioning of nuclear facilities.
* Communicate effectively and take on challenging problems.
* Develop expertise and contribute to client solutions throughout the project lifecycle – from opportunity identification and bid creation to project delivery and closure.
Projects You Could Work On
* Support UK’s operating fleet of nuclear reactors – keeping them running or preparing for defueling and decommissioning.
* Assist with the next generation of nuclear reactors – SMRs and AMRs.
* Engage in decommissioning and waste‑management projects at Sellafield, Dounreay, NRS sites and the NDA estate, and contribute to the UK Geological Disposal Facility development.
* Develop safety cases for civil and defence nuclear facility clients, including nuclear production, fuel handling, transport, facility operations safety and decommissioning.
* Support the UK fusion programme and the current and future UK submarine fleet.
* Conduct periodic safety reviews of nuclear facilities.
Essential Requirements
* Degree or Master’s Degree in an Engineering discipline, Physics or Chemistry (or equivalent).
* Demonstrable 2‑4 years of civil nuclear or defence nuclear infrastructure experience.
* Ability to work autonomously or as part of a team.
* Strong communication and organisational skills.
* An ambition to develop and grow nuclear capabilities.
* A willingness to travel and spend time on client sites.
Desirable Requirements
* Project Management – basic understanding of project delivery.
* Regulatory Compliance – awareness of local, national and international nuclear regulations.
* Systems Engineering – integration of engineering disciplines for comprehensive solutions.
* Safety Case – knowledge of nuclear safety‑case development.
* Nuclear Engineering – understanding of nuclear physics, reactor operations and fuel management.
* Radiological Safety – awareness of radiological protection and legal obligations.
* Environmental Engineering – skills in assessing and mitigating environmental impacts, waste management, exotic waste and site remediation.
