As a Project Engineer, you’ll lead capital and improvement projects from concept through to commissioning—working collaboratively with Production, Technical, Quality, Engineering, and external partners to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant project delivery.
Key Responsibilities
* Project Planning & Delivery
* Lead end‑to‑end engineering projects (capex & opex) within agreed scope, budget, and timelines
* Produce project scopes, feasibility studies, business cases and ROI analysis
* Create and maintain project plans, budgets, resource schedules and documentation
* Coordinate contractors, suppliers and internal teams to ensure smooth execution
* Maintain accurate documentation (risk assessments, drawings, change controls, commissioning files)
* Develop engineering specifications, layouts, P&IDs, and equipment selections
* Oversee installation and integration of new equipment, utilities, automation and process lines
* Ensure compliance with food safety standards (HACCP, GMP, BRCGS), legislation (H&S, machinery directive)
* Manage FAT/SAT, commissioning, validation and performance testing
Skills & Experience Required
* Identify and deliver improvements to efficiency, energy usage, reliability and product quality
* Lead RCA activity and implement corrective/preventive actions
* Support digitalisation, automation, and technology‑driven improvements
* Ensure engineering work meets PUWER, LOLER, ATEX and site safety standards
* Produce RAMS and safe systems of work
* Embed hygienic design principles into all engineering activity
* Act as a key liaison point for production, technical, maintenance, and external partners
* Manage contractor inductions, site access and performance
* Communicate technical detail clearly across a range of audiences
* Prepare capex proposals, obtain approvals and track spend
* Source equipment/services, obtain competitive quotes and negotiate contracts
* Manage supplier relationships and ongoing technical support
Qualifications
* Degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical, Electrical, Process or Manufacturing Engineering
* Strong understanding of food manufacturing processes, utilities and hygienic design
* Experience with process design, line integration, installation and commissioning
* Knowledge of controls/automation (PLC, SCADA, instrumentation)
* CAD capability (AutoCAD/SolidWorks)
* Proven experience delivering engineering projects in a fast‑paced manufacturing environment
* Excellent planning, scheduling, organisation and risk management ski
* Capex and vendor management experience
* Knowledge of HSWA, PUWER, LOLER, RIDDOR, CE/UKCA marking
* Ability to produce RAMS and project safety documentation
* Strong communicator able to influence across functions
* Curious, analytical thinker with excellent problem‑solving skills
* Resilient and adaptable in a dynamic production environment
* Collaborative team player with a drive for continuous improvement.
* Lean / Six Sigma / CI experience.
* Experience in chilled, ambient, bakery, dairy, beverage or ready‑meal manufacturing.
* PRINCE2 / APM or equivalent project management training
* Experience in sustainability or energy‑reduction projects.
* Reliability engineering tools (FMEA, TPM, etc.)
