The post holder will complement and develop existing services through the provision of specialist knowledge & expertise in Anaesthetics.
In addition, the Royal Oldham Hospital (ROH) of the Northern Care Alliance (NCA) is increasing its paediatric surgical workload with a potential casemix age of 6 months and older. We are therefore looking to increase our paediatric anaesthetic expertise in order to cover this change.
Surgery currently includes Orthopaedics and Trauma, General Elective & Emergency Surgery, Vascular Elective and Emergency Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, Cancer Surgery, Urology, Day Case Gynaecology, Elective and Emergency Maternity.
There is a busy Obstetric Unit with over 5,000 deliveries per annum. The department at ROH has a strong reputation for teaching and has CT and ST trainees for Anaesthesia, ACCS and ICU. The Department has a strong learning structure with opportunities to be involved in the regular Simulation. The post offers a 10 PA contract primarily to cover theatre work during the week dependent on the requirements of the service at ROH. The post also includes on-call duties, weekend trauma and pre-operative assessment clinic cover. While routine cover will be at the Oldham and Rochdale sites, there may be an expectation to occasionally work at other sites.
Main duties of the job
The Anaesthesia and Surgical Division are looking to appoint a number of Consultant Anaesthetists to join our growing team at The Royal Oldham Hospital. You will join an enthusiastic and supportive team of anaesthetists and intensivists in the provision of an anaesthetic service to the Royal Oldham Hospital and Rochdale Infirmary.
We are looking for experienced and enthusiastic candidates who can demonstrate:
* Candidates must be on the specialist register for anaesthesia or have a reasonable expectation of achieving this within six months
* Candidates must be able to demonstrate an ability to deliver obstetric anaesthesia
* Expertise in ophthalmic regional anaesthesia is desirable
* FRCA or equivalent
* APLS is essential ATLS or ETC certification is desirable
* Completion of CCT/higher specialist training or equivalent in Anaesthesia
* Current Advanced Life Support Certification
* Participation in a management training course

Registration
* Full registration with the General Medical Council with a valid license to practice
* Inclusion on the Specialist Register / Admission to the Register within 6 months of interview (CCST or CCT in Anaesthetics (or within six months of entitlement)
* Evidence of Accredited Clinical & Educational Supervision of Medical Learners
Essential Qualifications
* MBChB or show evidence of equivalent training and experience
* Higher Level Obstetrics
* Higher Level Paeds
* Post Graduate Degree e.g. MD, PhD, MSc
Knowledge and Skills
* Wide experience in Anaesthesia
* Broad experience in the management of all aspects of Anaesthetics
* Evidence of audit work and where this has brought about change
* Evidence of participation in research
* Good understanding of Clinical Governance
* Research Skills: Publication of research articles, demonstrating understanding of research methodology and commitments
* Evidence of relevant peer reviewed papers and other publications (e.g. book chapter, book editor, case report – not abstracts or letters)
Communication
* All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues
