An exciting opportunity has arisen within our Gynaecology Division for a suitably qualified and motivated individual to provide strong clinical leadership in the role of Deputy Department Manager/ Shift Leader.

The Gynaecology Emergency Department delivers care for patients with pregnancy related conditions and acute gynaecology problems.

We are looking for experienced nurses with a strong interest in women's health.

The role will involve, overseeing and delivering direct patients care, co-ordinating the emergency department, managing a team of nurses, coaching junior staff and supporting the department manager with day to day operational management .

The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic, motivated and forward thinking individual who will be passionate and committed to delivering excellent standards of clinical care and patient experience.

The post holder will have a leading role in developing services and therefore will need to be able to demonstrate the ability to embrace and implement change.


Main duties of the job

Support the Department Manager in leading and supervising a safe, high standard of nursing practice and the delivery of evidenced based patient care in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code and the Trust's Strategy for Nursing and Trust Policies and Procedures.

Job responsibilities

Assist with the management of the department, maintaining high standards of nursing practice and promoting the philosophy of patient and family centred care. Ensuring effective communication is maintained at all times.

Function at experienced nurse level, able to make effective decisions autonomously / independently without supervision and in partnership with patients, families and the multi-disciplinary team when required.

Act as a leader / co-ordinator and role model for the nursing team, ensuring the delivery of a high standard of evidence based care to patients and providing support for all staff on the unit.

Oversee projects within the department and provide representation at appropriate Trust meetings

Facilitate the education of registered and non registered staff and work in association with, and the support of, the department manager in defining standards of care and practice aimed at developing and/or improving quality patient care.

Manage and co-ordinate the department, Working independently and without supervision.

The post holder may be required to work within any of the division as required.

Participate in data collection for nursing indicators and input it into NUMIS.

Support the department manager in maintaining mandatory training compliance,

Support the department manager in risk management, managing clinical incidents etc.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* RGN Qualification with shift leader experience
* Professional Knowledge acquired through degree supplemented by diploma level specialist training, experience, short course-managerial training


Experience

* Specialist knowledge and skills, underpinned by clinical competence.
* Develop specialised programmes of care, provide highly specialised advice concerning care and discharge planning
* Good time management and ability to organise juniors
* Experience of co coordinating skill mix on staff rotas
* Health and wellbeing promotion for patients and colleagues


Skills, knowledge and aptitudes

* Implements policies and proposes changes to practice
* Manages and develops staff
* Demonstrates 6 C's at all times
* Deals with distressed relatives / breaking bad news
* Ability to engage & motivate workforce
* Ability to manage time and work under pressure
* Promote local resolution to complaints and demonstrate ability to diffuse conflict
* Contribute to the development of specialist protocols
* Undertake surveys or audits as necessary
* Awareness of regulatory bodies & requirements e.g. CCG's NHSLA, CQC, NMC
