Overview

Custody & Community Support Worker - (Devon) – Are you ready to put your knowledge into action and make a real difference? We have an exciting opportunity to join our team across Devon (Peripatetic). You0ll work directly with individuals involved in the criminal justice system, supporting their rehabilitation journey through guidance, encouragement, and practical help.

As a Support Worker, you0ll manage a caseload of participants in a community setting. From initial engagement and assessment through to the end of their sentence, you0ll provide consistent guidance and motivational support. You0ll deliver one-to-one and group interventions designed to help participants overcome barriers, reintegrate into society, and successfully complete their rehabilitation journey. We0re looking for compassionate, resilient individuals to take on a dynamic and rewarding role supporting individuals both in custody and as they transition back into the community. You0ll help them navigate challenges, access vital services, and build more positive futures. Whether you0re a recent graduate in criminology, psychology, social work, or someone passionate about social justice and rehabilitation, your empathy and commitment are what matter most. You0ll be part of a dedicated team working to reduce reoffending and create safer, stronger communities. This initiative aims to create safe, supportive spaces where individuals can engage in positive activities that promote social inclusion, improve wellbeing, and build the skills needed to face life0s challenges.

Location: Peripatetic, the cluster will cover areas across Devon. Hours: 37 hours per week. Contract: Permanent. Closing Date: 30 October 2025.


Key Responsibilities

* Manage a caseload of participants across both custody and community settings with complex needs and provide advice, guidance and support to overcome barriers to social inclusion and signpost to internal and external support.
* Completion of pre-release work/through the gate support, initial assessments and creation of individual/tailored action plans, delivery of interventions on a one to one and group work basis, motivational support and guidance to help and sustain engagement, progress reviews (updating and developing) and reinforce positive outcomes.
* Ensure the accurate and timely recording of input participant data and information to operate within contractual, administrative and financial requirements.
* Meet individual performance targets and contribute towards meeting team performance targets in line with contractual requirements.
* Provide information as required to support the monitoring and tracking of performance against contract targets and to ensure activities are effective.
* Ensure effective case management and coordination of risk with safeguarding of adults and children. This includes timely notification of concerns regarding changes in individual risk to the Probation Service and adherence to systems, policies and procedures to support risk management.
* Implement safeguarding policies and procedures within all aspects of delivery, to protect children and vulnerable adults within both a custodial and community setting.
* Contribute to the creation and provision of a welcoming and inclusive environment, enabling participants to fulfil their potential and desist from crime.
* Lead and contribute to the delivery of a range of assessments and activities/interventions designed to enable individuals to achieve positive change, reduce re-offending, promote engagement in appropriate services, overcome multiple and complex barriers to employment, access mainstream services and reintegrate into their local communities.
* Work in partnership with other agencies to raise awareness of the service and carry out joint working to enable effective engagement and progress to support rehabilitation.
* Work closely with peer mentors and/or volunteers to aid caseload management and access support for participants such as housing, substance misuse, physical and mental health, etc.
* Individually and as a team member, contribute towards a learning environment to develop skills and share best practice.
* Contribute to the safe and compliant delivery of the service by understanding and complying with regulations, company policies and contractual requirements, e.g. Health & Safety and Information Security. Handle personal data in accordance with the organisation0s data protection policy.

The peripatetic nature of this role requires regular travel across the allocated cluster for caseload management, service delivery and internal/external meetings, and may require covering other locations within the South West.


Skills and Experience

* Demonstrable experience of/ability to achieve individual performance goals and/or contribute towards team and organisational targets.
* Experience of inputting and retrieving electronic data and maintaining computer-based information systems in an accurate and timely manner.
* Maintenance of professional boundaries and ability to work with and manage challenging behaviour.
* Effective communication and ability to work with partnership agencies and stakeholders and maintain effective working relationships.
* Experience and/or ability to work with people on a one-to-one and group work basis. Ability to motivate others and facilitate learning to change attitudes and behaviour.
* Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills (verbal, presentation and written skills) and ability to communicate concisely and effectively.
* Highly organized with the ability to maintain accurate records with timely recording and to meet deadlines.
* Experience of working with a variety of people who have experienced social/personal difficulties and/or experience within the criminal justice system and understanding of barriers faced by offenders with multiple and/or complex needs.
* Confident with the ability to exercise authority and reinforce boundaries appropriately.
* Critical thinking and reflections to support evaluation of interventions and service delivery, identifying areas for development.
* Experience of/ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

Experience of two or more of the following:

* Delivery of group work programmes to support positive change and reduce reoffending.
* Delivery of individual programmes to support positive change and reduce reoffending.
* Knowledge of the local labour market, skills provision, local service providers.
* Delivery of advice and guidance (i.e. debt management/ Employment, Training Education, housing/substance misuse/mental health).
* Supporting those with substance misuse or mental health problems.
* Coaching/mentoring.
