Main duties of the job
The postholder will work within the Maternity Directorate in the multidisciplinary team to promote a culture of staff and patient safety.
To co-ordinate, monitor, and develop risk management systems within the directorate.
To support the maternity clinical governance manager in the development and implementation of the clinical governance framework.
To co-ordinate timely and effective investigations of incidents.
The postholder is responsible for their own practice and is expected to maintain a high standard of professional expertise and ensure the highest standard of midwifery care during the ante-natal, intrapartum, and postnatal periods.
The postholder will provide professional leadership and mentoring to less experienced midwives and support colleagues in a multidisciplinary team.
They will work clinically WTE each week, which may include nights and weekends, either in a clinical area or as an operational bleep holder.
The postholder will represent the department at local, Trust, and system-wide meetings as required.
Excellent verbal and written communication, leadership, and facilitation skills are essential.
Additional responsibilities
- Responsible for coordinating the incident reporting system daily and managing investigations into serious untoward incidents within Maternity, including representing the directorate at trust-wide forums.
- Liaising with the Maternity and Newborn Safety Investigations to support their independent investigations and interviews, while supporting Trust staff involved in incidents and investigations.
Professional
- Facilitates an environment where patient safety and quality, particularly risk management, are perceived as essential to care and wellbeing.
- Promotes a culture of participation, openness, and accountability throughout the Directorate. Listens to staff concerns and reports them to the Governance Lead and Senior Midwifery Team.
- Approachable and available to support staff following clinical incidents, providing structured reflection for midwives and doctors.
- Leads local investigations on PSIRF responses, interviews involved staff as required, produces reports with recommendations and action plans to reduce risks.
- Responsible for grading and inputting incident reports, managing Ulysses to produce reports for trend monitoring.
- Develops close working relationships with the Patient Safety Team, Trust Risk Manager, and the Corporate Risk Management team.
