An exciting opportunity exists within the Adult Low Secure Mental Health ward at Northgate Hospital in Morpeth. The Tyne Unit is an 18‑bed low‑secure service for men who present with mental health conditions who either have offended or displayed offending type behaviour, and pose a significant danger to themselves or the public.
Tyne Unit is recovery focused and has a multi‑disciplinary team approach to treatment. We strive to provide rehabilitation and treatment for patients where discharge pathways have proven difficult.
This post is an excellent opportunity for staff who are interested in facilitating the delivery of therapeutic activity within an inpatient environment alongside a strong multi‑disciplinary team.
Main duties of the job
You will support patients in identifying and carrying out individualized activity and provide ward‑based activity. You will also take an active role in implementing Talk 1st and the Safe Ward interventions. The post holder will work closely with the occupational therapy team and as part of the wider ward team.
Key responsibilities include creating an activity‑based culture on the inpatient ward, coordinating a range of social, recreational and leisure activities, and undertaking designated tasks from nursing and occupational therapy treatment plans. Regular supervision will be provided by an identified supervisor within the ward team.
Person Specification
Education and Qualification
* Formal qualifications such as NVQ Level III or equivalent knowledge, or willingness to work towards them
Skills and Competencies
* Planning and organisational skills, excellent communication skills
* Recent or current experience of working in a mental health setting
* Experience that demonstrates leadership skills and ability to self‑motivate
Knowledge and Experience
* Experience that demonstrates skills acquired in a care setting
* Knowledge of a range of leisure/creative technical activities
