Garden Retail Assistant
Carpenter's Nursery & Farm Shop, St Albans
Part-time (20–30 hours per week, including weekends)
About us
Carpenter's Nursery & Farm Shop has been family-run in St Albans for over 100 years. With our roots firmly in horticulture, we grow a wide range of seasonal vegetables and plants on site, and stock everything from bedding plants, shrubs, compost and tools to artisan food, drink and unique gifts. Our ethos is simple: to celebrate seasonality, provenance and quality while offering our customers an inspiring shopping experience.
Why join us?
This is not your average retail role. Every day is different — one moment you'll be creating eye-catching displays of fresh produce and plants, the next you'll be advising customers on seasonal veg, gardening products or the perfect foodie gift. You'll be part of a small, supportive team where your ideas, creativity and love of plants and food will really shine.
What you'll be doing
* Designing and refreshing seasonal displays that showcase plants, fresh produce, gardening goods and artisan food.
* Acting as a champion for local produce and gardening, inspiring customers with your knowledge and enthusiasm.
* Offering exceptional customer service, from helping someone choose a seasonal ingredient to advising on the right compost for their garden.
* Using our EPOS system for ordering and stock management.
* Serving customers at the tills with a friendly, efficient manner.
* Keeping the shop and plant areas looking their best with high standards of merchandising and housekeeping.
* Supporting with stock replenishment, stock takes and moving products.
About you
* You've worked in horticulture, a garden centre, farm shop, deli or similar retail environment.
* You're a genuine foodie and plant lover, with a passion for gardening, local produce and artisan food & drink.
* You've got a creative eye — you love making displays that stop people in their tracks.
* You're friendly, approachable and professional, with excellent customer service skills.
* You're confident using tills and computers.
* You enjoy working as part of a team but are equally happy using your initiative.
