Job Summary
We are seeking a dynamic orthoptist to join a large team across the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust sites in North London. This role will be primarily based at Barnet Hospital and Edgware Hospital, with occasional cover at other sites.
Responsibilities
* Provide a high‑quality orthoptic service as an autonomous, highly specialist practitioner, delivering preventative and therapeutic care in line with the standards of the British and Irish Orthoptic Society (BIOS).
* As part of the glaucoma service: assess, diagnose, treat and educate patients using advanced clinical skills and specialist glaucoma knowledge.
* Co‑manage complex and unstable glaucoma cases alongside ophthalmologists within the multidisciplinary Glaucoma team.
* Lead and develop orthoptic clinical practice and contribute to service improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
Essential
* Orthoptic degree or diploma.
* HCPC registration.
* Extensive experience in all aspects of clinical orthoptics, including specialist services.
* Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD).
* Demonstrated knowledge and clinical skills relevant to orthoptics and extended roles.
* Strong working relationships with multidisciplinary teams and the ability to work independently.
* Ability to perform under pressure in a busy environment while maintaining high‑quality practice.
* Excellent communication skills, professional and respectful interaction with patients and staff.
* Calm, effective handling of difficult situations with empathy.
* Flexibility to cover cross‑site duties and adapt to timetable changes.
Desirable
* BIOS Clinic Tutors Course or equivalent.
* Higher Education Certificate in Glaucoma.
* Experience working in glaucoma clinics – assessing, diagnosing and treating patients.
Personal Qualities & Attributes
* Demonstrable ability to meet the Trust Values.
* Flexibility to cover cross sites and acceptance of timetable changes.
Disclosure and Barring Service Check
This position requires a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check in accordance with the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975.

Salary and Benefits
£55,524 to £62,652 per annum (inclusive of HCAS, pro‑rata). Permanent part‑time contract.
