Overview
We are looking for a confident and enthusiastic Geomatics Analyst to join the National Monitoring Survey team. This role focuses on the delivery of remote sensing products, with a strong emphasis on airborne optical data to support intertidal vegetation mapping, particularly saltmarsh extent and zonation. The work contributes to the Environment Agency’s statutory reporting obligations under the Water Environment (Water Framework Directive) Regulations. You will work as part of a small, collaborative team to produce high-quality spatial data that supports environmental monitoring and reporting.
Travel to EA offices and the Geomatics team hub base in Bath may be required; the post is full-time, with flexibility considered for other working patterns. The National Monitoring Survey team is national and located at various sites around the country.
Responsibilities
* Process and analyse aerial photography and other airborne optical datasets; use satellite and drone data where appropriate.
* Collect and integrate ground truth data to support and validate remote sensing outputs.
* Produce saltmarsh extent and zonation maps from high-resolution aerial imagery; assist with opportunistic Macro Algae monitoring in intertidal zones.
* Edit existing spatial features and digitise new extents based on remote sensing interpretation; identify vegetation types using a broad classification system suitable for intertidal habitats.
* Support environmental monitoring and incident response through other remote sensing analysis.
Team
The National Monitoring Survey team collaborates with National and Area teams to co-deliver monitoring requirements; it provides specialist services for Lidar, Aerial Photography and Satellite data to deliver high-quality geo-information.
Experience / Skills Required
* Relevant degree in Geography, Remote Sensing, GIS, Environmental Science or related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
* Strong GIS skills, ideally using ESRI products (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, or ArcMap) and experience working with large spatial datasets for analysis and reporting.
* Practical experience with remote sensing data, particularly airborne optical imagery; understanding of image classification techniques for habitat mapping; experience with satellite and drone data is beneficial.
* Familiarity with feature class management and spatial editing workflows; ability to identify vegetation types in imagery and map habitats.
* Strong organisational skills, professional attitude, ability to work independently and meet deadlines; good communication and teamwork.
Desirable
* Interpreting airborne imagery and applying classification systems to identify vegetation types and map habitats with confidence and accuracy.
Additional Information
You will be based anywhere within working proximity to an EA office. You will be expected to travel to Bath for team meetings and to meet team charter needs. The role is full-time; other patterns may be considered on request.
For questions, please contact David White at David.white@environment-agency.gov.uk or Tel 07552 271881. Interviews will be via MS Teams. Interview dates are likely to be week commencing 13 October. Length of contract: Up to November 2026.
