Southampton City Council is looking for an experienced, confident and proactive Clerk of Works to join our Housing Operations team. In this vital role, you will ensure that construction works carried out on behalf of the Council by our procured Contractor meet the highest standards of quality, safety, and compliance within timescales and budget. You will support the Project Manager by playing a key part in delivering between £4m-£8m refurbishment projects and larger repairs to both voids and occupied properties across our housing portfolio. What You’ll Be Doing: Monitoring and inspecting construction and refurbishment works across a range of Council properties. Ensuring all works are delivered in accordance with contracts, specifications, drawings, legislation, and Council policies. Carry out auditable inspections and quality control checks challenging the contractor when required Maintaining accurate site records and preparing detailed reports on progress, risks, and compliance. Assisting and advising contractors on quality, standards, and interpretation of contract documents. Attending site meetings and liaising with project managers, contract administrators, and cost managers. Undertaking Health & Safety monitoring and escalating risks where needed. Contributing to continuous improvement, project control systems, and operational effectiveness. What We’re Looking For: Professional membership of the Institute of Clerks of Works, HND in Construction/Surveying (or similar) or significant construction experience with site inspection responsibilities. Strong knowledge of construction standards, legislation, and British Standards Working knowledge and experience of CDM and Health and Safety policies Ability to monitor and inspect works to ensure high-quality delivery. Proven experience in keeping clear, accurate site records and reports. Understanding of contractual responsibilities within construction projects. Ability to build successful working arrangements and partnerships with internal and external service providers Drive to ensure that productivity levels are optimised across all areas of responsibility Clean driving licence. As the work is varied a flexible approach is required to meet changing needs and tight deadlines. Excellent customer service skills, enthusiasm, and a ‘can do’ attitude is all essential as you’ll be our ambassador when you visit our customers’ homes to carry out quality control checks. You will liaise with residents, peers and colleagues on a daily basis so communication and customer focus will be essential to the role. Organisational, customer service and time management skills are key to this role.
