Nottingham (Nottinghamshire)
University Of Nottingham
Research technician

Offer description

Overview

We are seeking a Research Technician to work on an project investigating the role of the microbiome in providing resilience to multi-stress environments in Anthony Bishopp's lab (Sutton Bonington Campus, University of Nottingham, UK).

This research is part of a trilateral grant in Climate Proofing Agriculture, with partners in the USA (Eric Lam's group Rutgers) and Germany (Hardy Rolletscheck's group, IPK Gatersleben). The project will investigate how abiotic stresses interact to impact plant growth and explore the role that the microbiome has in providing stress resilience, using duckweed as a model.

Duckweed is also emerging as a promising new protein source that does not require arable land. Its small size and tractability enable examination of a wider matrix of environmental stress combinations than would be possible with other species. The goal is to identify specific combinations of stresses that provide the greatest challenges to plant productivity.

Responsibilities

* Work alongside a postdoc in Nottingham and international partners to conduct a large-scale genotype-by-environment screen of duckweed growth under various conditions.
* Assist with plant growth and phenotyping experiments.
* Apply microbiology, molecular biology, tissue culture and plant transformation techniques as needed.

Qualifications

* Experience in plant growth and phenotyping.
* Experience working as part of a team.
* Experience in microbiology, molecular biology, tissue culture and plant transformation is highly desirable.

Contract details

This is a full-time post (36.25 hours) and is available from 1 November 2025 on a 3-year fixed term contract.

Requests for secondment from internal candidates may be considered on the basis that prior agreement has been sought from both your current line manager and the manager of your substantive post if you are already undertaking a secondment role.

Disability Confident

A Disability Confident employer will generally offer an interview to any applicant that declares they have a disability and meets the minimum criteria for the job as defined by the employer. It is important to note that in certain recruitment situations such as high-volume, seasonal and high-peak times, the employer may wish to limit the overall numbers of interviews offered to both disabled people and non-disabled people.
